Like TH? Even think that they are pretty good, or perhaps just fair to middling? Well, you get this and you'll realise the genius that they were. But I'm not here to preach, esp. to those who are no doubt already converted.

Ignore for a minute that EACH of these CDs has a DVD on the flipside, and ignore that each has been remastered with 5.1 surround. This is the entire studio collection, and to say that it's awesome is a total cop out. It's full of tracks I didn't know I knew and of gems I thought I wouldn't hear again (there are extras on each CD, for example 'Sugar in my Cup', which until now appeared only on Sand in the Vaseline, appears here).

The downside is the price as it's only on import. But here's a tip, do what I did, spend the extra and go to NYC for a great w/e and pick up the set for the same price in $ as you get it here in pounds, in effect sixty quid toward your flight. I paid $[...].

Get this, I've got the whole lot on shuffle.

Simply brilliant. The remastering has been executed to a very high standard and breathes new life into these amazing records. I can not recommend this highly enough. Not listened to the 5.1 mixes as I don't have that set up, but if they have been mixed with the same attention to detail as the stereo masters, they will no doubt be excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal lossless 24-bit 96kHz 5.1 mixes! 1 July 2012
By Mark Baum - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Much has been said about the drawbacks of the DualDisc format and the packaging of "Brick". It is a neat-looking package. But I didn't buy this for the looks.

The DVD-Audio is a treat! For those not used to DVD-Audio it is for those with the equipment and/or software tools to access it in all of its lossless glory. While most people have a DVD player that can play the audio CD side and the Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes they're losing out on the MLP-encoded lossless DVD-Audio. In particular, the MLP-lossless audio is encoded at full 24-bit 96kHz sampling per channel. Dolby Digital 5.1 AC3, mostly used with DVD video, is lossy and usually encoded at 48kHz at 16-bit resolution.

The end result is that the lossless mixes pack much more of a punch and provide a bit more ambiance and separation. I definitely got absorbed into each song as I found myself enjoying exploring separate instruments within the sound field.

The audio CD sides are a definite improvement over the original releases. But I'm always looking for something better in regards to portability. I took the time to extract the 5.1 lossless DVD-Audio to lossless multichannel FLAC, downmixed the high-resolution audio to 2-channel surround via FFMPEG and, from there, created my own lossless 48kHz Pro-Logic compatible master mix for further mixdowns for use with my portable players and various other formats (MP3, Ogg Vorbis, etc.) while keeping the audio separation intact. Given the limitations I wound up creating a better 44.1kHz CD downmix than what's provided here.

For audio geeks, this is a great set to play with. The bonus tracks and alternate mixes, not to mention some extended liner notes, are nice bonuses to a set that features phenomenal reference-grade audio. Talking Heads fans will definitely want to get this set. For audiophiles this may make you into fans while testing and showing off your audio rig.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great brick 16 Mar. 2006
By Michael Grabowski - Published on Amazon.com

Overall this is a great release for Talking Heads fans, but it's good that Rhino is also releasing the albums separately because not all of these were necessary. (True Stories in particular.) The box itself is rather ugly and I actually prefer the packaging I've seen for the individual releases, but this was at a better price than those.

Anyway I am writing this review to comment on the technical issues others have complained. I was really nervous about spending so much on this given the apparent probability of playability problems. Well, my DVD player, a low-budget Magnavox model that is over 3 years old, plays both sides of each disc just fine. Videos, photo galleries, sound settings, they all work on my equipment. I haven't tried the CD sides on my auto or portable disc players.

As for the new sound, it's great and I have no complaints. It does seem like Harrison & Thorngren did a little more to the tracks than just remaster--I'm pretty sure there has been some tweaking with certain instruments and parts that makes these different from the old mixes. I'll have to pull out my old albums and listen again but there's a few places where there seem to be more guitar echoes, vocal reverb & such than before. Are these things that have really always been there or have they been actually remixed in ways the band did not originally intend?

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good, Why Did I Wait So Long? 3 July 2009
By DGS - Published on Amazon.com

Last week I read an article in Stereophile about this package and the writer said that this was a great example of an "Advanced Resolution-5.1" remix. He is correct.

I have only had time to listen to 12 songs and I am convinced this is one of the best 5.1 recordings available. I cannot believe I waited so long to buy this.

Regarding some glitches with the discs, I have had trouble getting the videos to play in advanced resolution. I don't know, sometimes HDMI 1.3 has trouble locking with the processor.

But, the music & the new mixes in surround are stunning, If you have the right system to play these discs, get a "white brick" soon before they become unavailable.Talking Heads

4.0 out of 5 stars The double-edge of Dual Disc..... ouch! 31 Oct. 2005
By M. Svetinsky - Published on Amazon.com

I won't waste time commenting on the music here, cause if you are considering buying the Brick, you must be a fan already. Rather, I'll comment on the odd behaviours of these Dual Discs.

1.) The CD side plays on only 1 of my 4 home players... a very old Sony changer, but they don't play on a newer Sony SACD player, nor on my Marantz Universal player or Toshiba DVD player. Strangely, I can play or rip the CDs in my Mac G5, and they do play in both my car players.

2.) No Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. I am no fan of the sound of DD, but for people without DVD-Audio players, you are out of luck on hearing the amazing 5.1 mixes. With other DualDiscs, i've been burned the other way.... only getting a DolbyDigital 5.1 mix that sounds worse than the normal CD tracks. Dual Disc labelling is seriously misleading!!

3.) The DVD-Audio 5.1 mixes are truly amazing, in both mixing and sound quality, but oddly, the center channel is out-of-phase with the Front Left & Rights. I have never heard this with any other 5.1 DVD-A or SACD discs, so it is not a problem with my system. I find the sound to be much better with the center turned OFF, as the phase cancellation sucks the life out of the front channels.

SO... the content is amazing, but Dual Discs are NOT. They are a cruel joke that i will continue to fall for whenever i see one that I really really want. But if you have a DVD-A player, then you must hear these discs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Burning Down The House! 24 Nov. 2005

Jerry Harrison should be given an award for the masterful mixing of the surround! Thank you Jerry and others!

I never thought I would get to hear your music presented this way. The DVD-A surround is just a blast to hear! It's a thrill!

The only complaint I have is that there is no printing on the DVD jewel box, so I must remove the DVD from the shelf to see what the title is. Big deal!

This is one of the best surround re-issues/remix I have yet to hear. How wonderful!
