Antibalas first release (Libaration Afro Beat Vol.1) on Ninja Tune was a little bit of a surprise. It's not that type of music I associate with the ninjas. But they made me listen to it. Antibalas second album, Talkatif, is a continuing of their first album, pure afrobeat.
And it's really good...
It has soul, rhythm and body... I want to dance... I sit in my chair at work, but my body is moving...
If you ever heard Fela Kuti, dig funk, latinomusic or beats and breaks, you wont get dissapointed. It's not as expimentally jazzy and fusion as Fela was sometimes but it's as jazzy and not to forget, funky. Funky as mama...
This 13 strong man band has help me to believe in the future of non studioproduced records. More live feeling and not superproduced music. Talkatif hasn't any live track as they had on vol. 1 had but it doesn't matter. It feels live anyway.
I love it...

My dreams came true with this funkdy masterwork! I was absolutely fascinated by ANTIBALAS first work "Vol. 1-Liberation Afrobeat".
Praying they keep their good work, I bought their second CD "Talkatif" and I listened to this 9:36-min-song "talkatif" ten times or more...in one day!
This is not only music, this ist spirit, real spirit! this ist real music! this is real soul, real funk, real groove!!! The beats, the bassline, the melodies makes you crying and dancing and praying and hoping and shaking and shaking and shaking!!!! hope to see them live one day... must be like a fist-time-visit with burning spear!!!
this is an absolutely must-have CD for all groove'n'funk-lovers and any real music lover!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Afrobeat Album... 16 May 2003
By RADAR - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Listening to Fela Kuti's Live Album with Ginger Baker got me to start listening to the funky, groovy, boogieing sounds of Afrobeat, But it wasn't until I listened to more afrobeat groups that was where I just got completely hooked.
I came across this brilliant album by accident and I must say this would be one of the best afrobeat albums I have ever heard in a very long time! Even just listening to it would get you completely hooked on this music!
A recommended must-buy album for all fans of Afrobeat!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cool, groove-laden modern Afro-Beat album 5 Sept. 2002
By DJ Joe Sixpack - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
America's finest Afrobeat band, with a fab follow-up to its debut album. Here the Brooklyn-based collective shifts, appropriately enough, from the harder-edged Afro-Beat of Fela Kuti into something closer to the sleek juju highlife of King Sunny Ade, who became Nigeria's next superstar, when Fela's star faded. This is a beautiful record, and probably a lot more accessible to the casual listener who might have been put off a bit by the squonking saxes and rugged rhythms of the first Antibalas album (or the entire Fela catalog!). Hyponotic and graceful, this is a superior space-out groove album. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Following in Fela's Footsteps 15 July 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I saw Antibalas at Los Angeles' Temple Bar back in February, and did they PUT ON A SHOW! 14-piece band with amazing orchestration to take advantage of that kind of instrumentality. At the time only their first album was out and they were selling a Tour Ep, so I had to get my fix there and then.
Talkatif is a great follow-up album with combustible, head-bobbing, body-shaking tracks that need more airplay (but I guess Clear Channel doesn't share or get the message of Afro-beat). As it is, Antibalas will add groove to any party, and create a party-like atmosphere where there isn't one.
Highly recommended, even though it's a scant 41 minutes; much like many of Fela's recordings on LP, now reissued as double-LP CDs. Don't forget to check out Fela's ZOMBIE.

By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Highly recommended listening, Talkatif showcases the Antibalas unique "Afrobeat" is a superbly recorded performance where the totally engaging rhythm section provides a steady and unique platform upon which soloists can appear and mesmerize the attention of the listener. The compositions given an outstanding technical performance include Gabe's New Joint; Hypocrite; World Without Fear; War Is A Crime; NYASH; N.E.S.T.A. 75; and the title piece, Talkatif.
