I am a lawyer and specialist in family mediation. I work every day with separating couples looking to resolve their issues together on their own terms instead of face to face in court. I champion the use of mediation and other techniques to resolve your separation disputes, encouraging you to take control of your own future and that of your kids by looking at your new life more from their eyes.
I recommend everyone who is separating or even thinking of it, reads Scott Docherty's book 'How To Talk To Your Kids About Separation'. It is full of good advice and if everyone were to read it before they talked to their children about splitting up, a lot of common and painful mistakes could be avoided. For each family going through this trauma there is a lot of anxiety, fear and suffering. Some of this is avoidable and is caused because we don't understand how much better we could manage these things. So parents make the same predictable and understandable mistakes, they make it worse than it need be. This hasn't happened to them before, so how would they know otherwise? Well, now they can know. This book is easy reading. It is not technical or full of jargon. It is however informed by the knowledge and insights gained by the author in his professional life working at the coal-face of family break-down as a mediator. So it is authoritative as well as accessible and should be distributed by the courts whenever someone applies for an order under the Children Act. The judges might usefully check litigants have read it and understood what it says. This might lead to some other useful areas for discussion, other than hearing dates, statements and whether the children are posted at six or six thirty, poor mites! We need a revolution in this area and this book is part of it.
During what is a crappy time for all involved this is a great book for us parents to help navigate our children through this difficult time in their lives. An esstial read for anyone at any stage of separation/divorce.
An essential read for any separating couples with children. Informative and concise which focuses on putting your children first. It also helped improve communication between myself and me ex-wife after I encouraged her to read it.
Scott's book is written in an informal, down to earth way and gives separating parents great advice on how to tackle the issues they face. I am an Accredited Family Law Specialist and Accredited Family Law Mediator and I will be recommending his book to my clients.
