    Top Customer Reviews

This is an ideal CD for any Japanese beginner. With a series of games you can quickly grasp very basic phrases and vocabulary, and if you have a microphone you can even test your pronunciation.

You have a choice of topics and games to play, but you would probably start with simple vocabulary lists, followed by a game. The topics are:

    Phrases
    Food
    Shopping
    Colours
    Numbers
    Countries
    Body Parts
    Telling The Time

You are shown a screen and on the left is a rather dapper-looking chap, on the right a friendly-looking lady, both on a video loop. As you click on each vocabulary item, the man or woman will say the word in Japanese. This makes you associate a picture of an item with the foreign word, as opposed to pairing it with a written English word. This makes learning vocabulary much easier.

Once you are confident with your vocab, you can then play an easy and/or hard game, where you are shown items at random and have to choose the correct one according to the Japanese word shouted out by your "hosts". You then score points based on your total. You can also test your pronunciation for each section.

After conquering these areas, you can then move on to a harder set of games, in which a computer-generated man will flip over cards with pictures of the words you have learned, and you have to choose the right one before the time runs out.

I finished this CD about 2 years ago, and even now (after a long gap of not learning Japanese) I still remember the key words and phrases.

The only downside is a rather irritating bug in the games for Body Parts: the word for foot and leg are the same (ashi), but the program has a pre-determined answer each time, so it only counts one of them as correct.
