This one was a lot less intense in many ways, despite the FBI/DEA/ATF busts, the MC gangs, the baddie within one of the security agencies, and was far more enjoyable and far quicker to read; it flowed more.
The tale pretty much follows the blurb, and I liked that the author created her lead Greg as having a brilliant brain and high IQ, but having issues with his weight and body image. No, she didn't make him obese, which obviously would have made him a turn off to Snake, as well as a total shock, but she did describe him as someone...well...normal. A 6ft tall guy who has a bit of weight around the waist and who isn't all 6/8-pack and muscles everywhere. I think I believed that because the leads had gotten to know each other over the phone for about 4/5 years until they finally met, both had appreciated the other for things other than looks. I believed in Snake's attraction to Greg, like I did Bull's to Red. I also liked the not-so-subtle message that she seemed to be conveying.
There isn't an awful amount of sex in this, as Snake is away undercover for a lot of the book, but what there was was sexy, though not reciprocal. I did like that neither had an issue with talking about their feelings, and that each had the other's welfare and safety at heart, and that the author managed to make them equals.
I have to be honest and say that this felt like less romance and more 'police' - to use the word loosely - procedural, and though it worked, I kind of found myself worrying more about the younger Matteo who seemingly was hooking up with the MC Prez Carlos, who sounded like he was old enough to be the former's dad. Not sure what's going to pan out there, but appearances...actually, were they appearances or simple honesty? I think it was the latter, which makes me totally want to read their book, though there's no information on the author's website at the moment.
This is overall a decent read and my No2 fave JG book, with Bull and Red and their books taking the No1 spot.
Ebook courtesy of Jessie G and Divine Magazine for my reading pleasure.
Snake is undercover and has been for the past few years. His main contact at the FBI is Greg. Over the years the two have built up a friendship which in turn has turned to something more. To finally meet face to face is a big step, especially for Greg who fears as soon as Gene (aka Snake) sees what he looks like he will be turned off. Greg is not a muscled bound hunk and has a serious lack of self-confidence. But when Snake kicks the door down and grabs him then maybe Greg has been worrying for no reason? Snake knows he has his work cut out to break into Greg’s inner conflicts but somebody as determined and headstrong as he is, has no doubt he will get his man.
The backstory was a complicated one and trying to remember who everybody is and whose side they are on is not a task for the lazy reader. Jessie G keeps you on your toes and focused on what is happening.
I loved that Greg is not the usual ripped and hunky guy but a more ‘normal’ dude, not fat and ugly for sure but a little soft and cuddly. A complete contrast to Gene (Snake). Although I love to read about two hot guys getting it on I liked that these two were all about the love and understanding of each other and finding what they have always yearned for. I would have liked to have felt more of the connection between them that initially happened over the phone and then especially when they finally meet. It was more of a ‘tell’ than a ‘show’ in the book. But no matter I loved it!
Another tough and gritty read in the series and I can’t wait for the next one. Four and a half stars.
