Review

'A world of enchantment opens before us in Hugh Lupton's Tales of Wisdom and Wonder. Strikingly stylized illustrations and decorative motifs add to the magic.' --Junior Education --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Hugh Lupton's prestigous career as a prefessional storyteller spans over twenty years. Hugh's other books for Barefoot include Tales of Wisdom and Wonder (1998), which won the Books for Children Mother Goose Award in 1999, and The Story Tree (2001), which was chosen by Smithsonian Magazine as a Notable Book for Children, 2001. He has performed throughout Britain, North and South America, Europe and Africa, telling stories from many cultures. He has a particular passion for Greek, Celtic, Norse and Anglo-Saxon mythological tales, for ballads, and for stories from his native East Anglia. The Adventures of Odysseus (2006) is Hugh's most recent project with Barefoot Books. Award-winning Irish illustrator Niamh Sharkey works in oils on a gessoed textured background to create the richness in colour that has quickly established her as a world class illustrator. Niamh has illustratrated several best-selling Barefoot Books including Tales of Wisdom and Wonder (1998), The Gigantic Turnip (1998), Jack and the Beanstalk (1999) and Tales from Old Ireland (2000). In 1999, Niamh received the Books for Children Mother Goose Award for best new illustrator, as well as the Bisto Award, the Irish award for best illustrator. Niamh lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. She has three children. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I find this CD dry, boring, slow, sexist (dizzy wife, king telling daughter to get married etc), irritatingly loud then quiet so you either don't hear it or get startled by it being too loud. But 6 year old loves it (aaargh).

This is a delightful book in every way. The tales, collected from sources as diverse as North America, Russia, France and Scotland amongst others are beautifully re-told in an idiom and intimate style ideally suited to imaginative young minds. The illustrations are original, tasteful and most engaging. The CD is sure to hold a young audience whether at home or school. All the components come together beautifully to make a captivating whole. A lovely present for any child.
