I bought this mainly for the original recording of I'm buzzed,
after having heard Steve Lukathers (El Grupo) version which is great.
I actually found that I don't like the 80's sound
of this CD in the same way as I don't like Eric Johnson's Ah Via Musicom
for the same reason but the playing is great and I think every guitarist should own it.
The best track by a mile is the bonus track 'Americana Boy' for pure tone and feel, lovely work.

HASH(0x8fba048c) out of 5 stars A Monster Cd by studio kingpin Landau!! 17 Nov. 2005

Forget any notion of the studio chameleon who can't rock. This guy is at the very top of any real list of great rock guitarists, he absolutely towers over guys like Satriani. He also writes good tunes, and this is a really killer collection of rock and fusion things Mike has featured in his live shows over the years. This is not to be missed! Hendrix influenced, Jeff Beck tone, fearless chops, what more do you want?

HASH(0x8fba06b4) out of 5 stars Big on TONE! 11 Feb. 2005
By KARL F. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Amazing. I am addicted to this album. The production is incredible, judging from the HDCD version; everything sounds perfect. Great tunes, if somewhat lacking in melodic development (I had considered rating it only four stars for this reason, but every other aspect fully compensates); a lot of short motivic themes and guitar cliches. (Then again, in a lot of cases Landau is half the reason they have become cliches!) But the star of this show is Landau's array of tones (duh), from the raw, biting strat grit to the spacious swelling chords. Anyone who was alive in the '80s has had an earful of Michael Landau at some point; "Tales" is a vivid reminder of why so many "high-profile" producers called him for the studio date. The interest areas in this album are largely harmonic and timbral --at some points, it's downright Holdsworthy in texture-- but there are some very tasty licks and some bluesy bits as well. Just don't expect a lot of Shrapnel "shredding"!
"Tales from the Bulge" may not be for everybody, but most fusion fans will dig it, and just about every guitar player who drools over great tone will wonder why they didn't get it sooner.

I am incredibly impressed by Michael Landau. Despite my affection for so many great American guitarists, I finally feel here is one player who on his day (often) and along with Eric Johnson can truly stand with that singular skill of SRV,Hendrix and Beck. The beauty in his tones is just mesmerising. Then he goes all raunchy and it kicks ass. I am not looking for shredders anymore they bore the crap out of me.Besides, after Allan Holdsworth, why bother he has re written the Universe of how to play guitar fast and actually extract meaning at the the same time.

Michael Landau is just too bloody good!

HASH(0x8fba0d44) out of 5 stars Do yourself a HUGE favor, Buy this CD!! 4 Jun. 2004

I never take the time to type out reviews for CDs but I'm making
an exception for this one. I am a GUITAR JUNKIE with over 1000
recordings that are mostly guitar oriented. "Tales From The Bulge" easily ranks in my top 10. There is some tremendous playing on this recording but what sets it apart from most others
is the brilliant compositions. "I'm Buzzed" is like a religious
experience to me each time I hear it.
Again, the musicianship is stellar (Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Lukather, Jimmy Johnson, Steve Tavaglione, Wayne Shorter...)
but the compositions are the reason this one will be remembered.
Purchase it. You'll thank me but more importantly you'll thank

Brilliant album. Guitar tone is one of the best iv ever heard. He has a really original sense of composition. Not a shredder but still a monster in the guitar world.
