I love this game! My first play-through saw my normally gentle girfriend, beat a poor defenceless beggar and be rewarded with a flying carpet for her actions. Meanwhile I was trying to help a man lost in the desert, only to be mercilessly beaten by skeletal minions. This game is full of these random and sometimes hilarious scenarios which happen to your character throughout his/her adventures across the old world.

If you go ahead and purchase this game, the first thing you will notice on receiving delivery will be the weight. I know of only a few games (Cavana being one) that weigh more than TOTAN. The majority of this weight comes in the form of the book of tales, the very core of the game. In this wonderful tome are all the adventures and scrapes your character can experience, and believe me there are a lot. I've played this game many times and I still find that the majority of the stories that come out are unique and new to me.

But a word of warning, this game is VERY random. There is almost no strategy to this game. You can choose appropriate skills, and make sensible decision and still find your character completely fails at every turn. Despite this there is a competitive element to this game, the first person to complete his or her predetermined goals and get back to Baghdad win. This aspect of the game is needed (otherwise it would go on forever) but who wins matters very little. This game becomes most enjoyable when you are able to forget about winning, and enjoy the stories which unfold to every character around the table.

In summary:
Don't buy this game if you're interested in winning, strategy, competition

Buy this game if you like high tales and adventure, a story to remember, randomness and general hilarity.

Saw some excellent reviews, and do not regret the purchase. It is very popular and does not stay in stock long. Very heavy quality product with an astounding amount of content. It replaces books and games at once and teaches quite how fun a story can be when you are engaged. With 4 of you playing at once and writing your own stories at the same time, it can be only described as epic.

This is very unlike any other board game. Travel about an Arabian-themed world coming across various strange encounters. Mad princes, beautiful enchantresses, hungry lions and enraged efreeti all will cross your path, and their reaction to you can vary wildly. When you discover what fated encounter befalls you you get to choose how to interact (pray, steal, aid, attack, etc) and you get told of options to use skills in the event. Then another player reads the tale of the event for you, celebrating your success or gleefully noting your suffering.

These events tend to reward you with story and destiny points which count towards victory. But these seem incidental almost, often being rewarded even for bad outcomes. You also gain wealth, treasures and potential statuses of great harm or aid. Much of the game is about dealing with these statuses, having to travel to different areas to counter them. In addition there are optional quests to complete that can give added bonuses, and these give extra structure to the game with various short term goals to achieve.

The replayability of this game is its most shocking feature. One might think one would get bored of samey tales and repeated events, but it simply doesn't happen. There are so many events in this game that coming across the exact same sequence twice is so unlikely.

I've seen some reviewers say that there is not enough agency in this game, that many outcomes just seems random. I didn't experience this myself, as you tend to make choices based on your skills and when you get mastery levels you attain even more control of your fate. However skill results aren't always positive, and in particular you'll find things like Weapon Use or Magic can be more of a liability than an aid.

I love this game. The best part is the huge book full of story telling elements for your adventure. You never know what might happen to your character, which is the best part of this game in my opinion. As a non-gamer female, this game is really immersive and I'm always keen to play. The components are gorgeous and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves adventure or storytelling games.

All big geeky board games are expensive and it's a shame when you take a risk, order and it is not enjoyable...that's why I am so thrilled to have discovered this game! The replay ability is great, every game is different. The board, cards and playing pieces are good quality. The book of tales is ring binded and the cover is laminated card so it does not get worn easily (although it is rather heavy!) really enjoyable game, easy to learn the rules and the different stories make it easy to loose your winning streak!

Hands down the best game if you want to have a fun evening without thinking too much. It is hilariously frustrating to try to follow through any plan. We end up playing without even caring about the win conditions. This game you play it because it is fun, not to win.
