“Joseph Reid is a blazing new talent in the action-thriller arena. Takeoff does exactly that from page one, and it doesn’t land until the end. You’ll be breathless!” —Raymond Benson, bestselling author of 007, The Black Stiletto, and In the Hush of the Night
“Joseph Reid’s novel Takeoff is aptly named. This fast-paced novel takes off with a bang, and only gains speed from there. Reid’s protagonist, federal air marshal Seth Walker, is much more than a sky cowboy. When not saving lives (or taking them), Walker works on circuit drawings. Those drawings have earned him a number of patents, and might be the key to a new life, that is if Walker can survive his current travails, as well as past baggage. Assigned to guard sixteen-year-old pop phenom sensation Max Magic, Walker finds himself in the middle of deadly power struggle. To keep his charge alive, Walker needs to navigate currents most treacherous, and distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. Reid writes like a seasoned pro, and yet this is his first novel. I am looking forward to more.” —Alan Russell, bestselling author of Burning Man
“Takeoff is a blast. From the first explosive scene to the last page, this story pins you to your seat and never lets you go. Seth Walker, the hero of this riveting tale, is a man worthy of many books. It’s a good thing he’s so well-armed with highly unique skills and street smarts and a charming wit, because Seth is on the frontlines in a very dangerous world. My money’s on this guy in the battles to come.” — James W. Hall, Shamus and Edgar Award–winning author
“Fast paced and adrenaline filled, Takeoff is a wild ride that never lets up for a single moment. A thrilling debut by a terrific new storyteller. Joseph Reid is a name to know!” —Chad Zunker, Kindle bestselling author of The Tracker

Seth returns to work after a personal tragedy and takes on an escort role for a teen pop star who's received death threats. He has to accompany her on a flight from New York to Los Angeles. The story gets right into the action with a scene at Los Angeles where Seth and Max, the girl he's protecting, come under fire and have to escape.
The story moves quickly in short, sharp chapters which keeps the pace fast and tense. Seth is a bit of a tech geek and there's a bit of detail around audio electronics and other techie stuff woven into the story. But I found that interesting, without overland. The potential for audio speakers as a weapon was intriguing. Max is a typical spoilt teenager, but as the plot unfolds, there's more to her than meets the eye. Both end up on the run, not knowing who to trust and who's betrayed them.
As an action thriller, this is first rate. Some fascinating insight into the Air Marshal role and how airports and airlines operate. Seth has his own issues to deal with but he's a likeable individual and not unduly troubled or flawed. The writing is snappy and quite visual; the dialogue is American and easy to 'hear' as you read. I enjoyed it far more than I expected. It was easy to read, kept my attention throughout and had twists I didn't expect. I'll be interested in reading the follow up which I believe is due to be published soon. An accomplished debut.
The first couple of chapters were dire and I almost gave up then though there was a shade of subsequent improvement.
Too much gratuitous violence and a good deal of it unbelievable - how did he stand any chance of survival? - and too much self-aggrandisement. His alter-ego as an electronics expert didn't contribute much either
I will be watching eagerly for the next in the series.
I was glad to read it, but it does not have that extra something that would make me want to hang around for more books in the series.
Why are so few authors afraid to tell a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, rather than it being part of a series?
