'...the social learning agenda proposed in this book enables pupils to gain, and practise, skills of communication and to develop positive relationships. It encourages behaviour which is sensitive and resilient to life in school and beyond school.' - Baroness Massey of Darwen
Too often the way in which we come to engage with school is in response to the challenges that schools face, whether in terms of school provision, regimes for testing, or the nature of the curriculum. This book, although mindful of these challenges, asks us to consider a different starting point, one that draws out the potential and possibilities that education provides.
Sam Frankel and John Fowler offer some practical and clear steps that invite educators to re-assess the way in which we see children in schools, and perhaps more importantly, ways in which we, as adults, can be part of establishing an environment that gives children the opportunity to truly learn.
It is by acknowledging the social dimension of children's lives, and by integrating this into our approach in schools, that we can be both inspired by children's potential and by the wider possibilities of education to make a lasting difference to the children of today and the adults of tomorrow.
Dr Sam Frankel has spent the last 15 years dedicated to promoting understanding of children's everyday lives. His work combines both an academic and practical engagement with children and their place in school and beyond. Sam has written a number of related publications.
John Fowler has spent over 30 years teaching in schools. An experienced head teacher, with additional roles as an Ofsted Registered Inspector, a Local Authority Advisor and Leadership Development Partner. John has shared his passion for learning in the UK and abroad.
