Last year, I wrote a critical review of Stephen Leather's 'The Bestseller' and I made a public promise that, if I should ever read one of his books and enjoy it, then I'd say so. Never let it be said that I don't keep my promises; 'Take Two' is a darn' good read!

The principal protagonists, Carolyn and Terry, are fleshed out sufficiently to be both likeable and believable. Admittedly, Terry could be seen as rather stereotyped but, for the purposes of a fast-moving novel, his character is more than adequately presented. I especially enjoyed the dialogue throughout the book. It reads realistically; these people talk like the people you know.

There are some niggly continuity errors which should have been weeded out: for example, is the truck driver's wife called Debs or Mary? At one point, Carolyn puts off phoning another character until Saturday morning and, on the next page, is apologising to him for getting in touch so late! There were others but, overall, you needn't let them spoil the pace of the story. Oh, and 'effect' does not have the same meaning as 'affect' - probably a typo but it set my teeth on edge!

In basing the novel among the cast and crew of a TV production company, Stephen Leather is clearly 'writing what he knows' and it's worked very well. The reader will probably work out what's happening around three quarters of the way through but there are still twists and turns and some edge-of-your-seat stuff that gave me a couple of late nights because I couldn't stop reading.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Stephen Leather adds great depth to the characters set in the British TV entertainment industry with the tensions involved in the daily activities. As always his writing style makes for an easy read and believable characters. It is a bargain at 99p. This novel should be in print on the bookshelves as well and it should attract a lot more readers and fans to Stephen Leather's other books.

This is one of the best books I've read in a very long time.

It takes place in the TV industry. Carolyn Castle is one of the best known actresses in TV soaps. After she witnesses a gangland murder, her life is changed forever. And that is all I can say without spoiling the story. All I can say is BUY IT!

I immediately liked the character of Carolyn, she made it impossible for me to put the book down, even though at times I wanted to slap her! I NEEDED to see what she was doing next. It was one of those I'll read to the end of the paragraph. No to the end of the page. No to the end of the chapter and 3 hours later I'm STILL reading it!

There aren't too many characters, the ones who are featured are integral to the story. The story is so good you never lose patience waiting for something to happen. Stephen Leather has again written a cracking story. The twists and turns in the story are brilliant. The story grabbed me at the first page and didn't let go til I'd finished it. I especially loved the part where Carolyn found her TV storyline spilling over into her "real" life.

So if you are looking for a good book for the weekend, buy this. Stephen Leather shows that he is brilliant in any genre. I loved this book and will definitely put it down as one to re read in the future

Carolyn Castle is one of the most famous faces in the UK and in other countries, too. She is the star of the soap opera "Rags to Riches" - a copy of "the Bold and the Beautiful" - a star known to millions. But she is in an age when the first signs of ageing are troubling her a lot. And younger women crawl their way to the top. And it doesn't really help that a sponsor is throwing a big party to give her a "Lifetime Award" - at 44 years! And her loverboy is doing extra hours with a much younger model. And that was that...
So at the award's night she has a drink too much. And then she has to fight a too eager lurch, who should drive her home, from raping her. So alone in the wilderness of Surrey she is searching for help - and enters in the wrong property. Where she witnesses a gang-related murder. She flees with the help of a truck-driver before the hired help of the killer can shoot her.
Now she has to ask herself if wellknown face could be her death...
The killer is the charismatic gangster Warwick Richards. A man more than capable of killing again to protect his secret. But does he really believe that Carolyn saw him commit murder?
So some sort of strange tango begins. Carolyn isn't secure what or whom she has seen. Warwick tests the grounds by trying a direct approach. He is sure that she knows nothing. But she's not sure of herself and seeks help with some obscure PI.
And that sets off an avalanche and people start dying...
Carolyn sees only one way out - that of an actress...

I found this thriller very entertaining and have read it in three hours without stopping. I can highly reccommend it for those who love their killers and victims out of the ordinary. And the plot merciless (poor Reg!!!) and full of twists and turns.

I found the dialogue repetitive and the story predictable. I finished reading it but only because I hate to give up on a book.
