The Sodor Mining Co. car is very nice, weighty feeling rolling stock item (rail cars, trucks, etc. that - in the "real" world! - can't move unassisted by another vehicle), that has a neat feature to it. It has a grey top with the bulk of the car tinted in a pretty shade of blue with "SODOR MINING CO." printed in white on both sides; it has a red bottom and 4 black wheels. The REALLY neat feature is its load of coal... it disappears with a turn (as if it was unloaded)! We paid $9.99 for our grandson's - WAY too much! - but it's become a joke between he and Grandpa... He holds it out, says "See this coal, Grandpa?" Then he puts it behind his back, flips the coal, and shows it to him again, saying "Where'd that coal go, Grandpa?" Of course, Grandpa acts amazed and puzzled, no matter HOW many times this joke is played, much to our grandson's delight! The name of the item is also on the bottom, which is a nice feature for collectors.
Now... what I see in this photo does LOOK like the same item we purchased back in 2011. However, in updating one of my reviews recently, I noticed that the photo was NOT an accurate depiction of a Take-n-Play item we'd purchased and reviewed. As I looked further, I saw there were MANY 5 star reviews I'd given Take-n-Play products between 2010-2012, when the line was superb. We began noticing quality changes in 2013 - by the end of the year, we'd become truly disappointed and stopped the collection. The purpose of this update is to let anyone considering a purchase of Sodor Mining Co. know that they should make sure that the photo is accurate, and that this is not actually a plasticized, detail-stripped item that replaced the one we purchased. If it's the same item, DEFINITELY rates 5 stars (since they've got it listed for $16, it probably is)... if it's a replacement, definitely does NOT! In our opinion, Fisher-Price took this line down to 4 stars in 2013, 3 stars in 2014, and now this wouldn't be worth anywhere close to the $6 MSRP Fisher-Price is asking for their small so-called "diecast" items in 2015. This is no longer a collection-worthy line, so unless you can be assured that this is one of the ORIGINAL 2011 Sodor Mining Co. pieces, don't waste your money! (And just so you're aware, Take-n-Play products are not compatible with wooden tracks.)
In case you're interested, here's a list of the originally high quality pieces of non-character rolling stock pieces that you might want to look: 2010's Quarry Car, Sodor Supply Co., Diesel Fuel Tanker, Storybook Car, Sodor Zoo Snake Car, Bubble TaFarm Animal Car first appeared on the "final" TNP 2010 Collector Checklist, and nker, Farm Animal Car. 2011's Sodor Mining Co., Spider Exhibit Car, Sodor Cement Mixer, Crocodile Special. 2012's Oil Tanker (there was also a Sodor Circus Monkey car, but as far as rolling stock goes, that's when we started questioning Fisher-Price's commitment to quality --- it was cute, but it was PLASTIC... the only metal on it were its magnet connectors.)
10/25/16 update: I'm going back and adding this update to each of my Take-n-Play reviews, since it's important information for any parents/grandparents out there with a young Thomas & Friends enthusiast who holds a special place in their heart, and is considering beginning a collection for them. I just found out the TnP line of diecast trains/vehicles/rolling stock with magnetic connectors is being REPLACED by Fisher-Price in 2017 with a diecast line called "Thomas & Friends Adventures", which will be TnP models modified with PLASTIC HOOK & LOOP COUPLERS. Obviously, your youngster will not be able to connect the 2014-2016 TnP models (with their flat, round 1-way magnetic connectors), nor the 2010-2014 TnP models - or Learning Curve's compatible 2002-2010 Take Along models - with their protruding 2-way magnetic connectors - with the new types of couplers as of next year.
2/17/17 Update: Fisher-Price must've received a slew of complaints from Take-n-Play owners, because they've now developed magnetic clip engine connectors (to clip onto the magnetic trains - but ONLY those with the flat round 1-way magnets... they don't want to invite comparisons between the high quality of the older trains with protruding 2-way magnets! - that have a plastic hook & loop coupler to be able to connect to the new Adventures engines), along with track adapter pieces (Take-n-Play track pieces/sets have only 1 male or female part at the end to connect up to other track/sets, while the new Adventures tracks/sets have both one male & 1 female part on EACH end), available by directly contacting F-P.
