Product Description

Review

From the Author

My objective is to provide you with a well-defined path as you embark on your career as a product manager. The scope of this book provides a framework for both newly minted product managers, as well as more seasoned product managers. Since the science of product management is highly variable because of the range of industries it crosses and the availability of resources accompanying each company's stage of growth, this book focuses on the common threads rather than highlighting the differences.

Although this book was designed specifically to help product managers succeed within their organizations, the information should also prove helpful to functional business leaders and senior executives. Given that product management lacks a central industry standard, organizations looking to establish a product management function often lack clarity on what product management means, the value of the role, and its boundaries.

Whether you're a CEO looking to implement a product management function or a functional business leader looking to ensure a strong working relationship with a new product management team, the substance of the book should clarify how the pieces fit.

The author gives here a step-by-step approach on how to tackle (new and present) product management from start to finish.

In each chapter the author uses:

-A 'story' at the start of each chapter to illustrate what a product manager needs to move forward.
-Practical or theoretical pointers, tips and tools (progressively illustrated chapter by chapter).
-Each chapter ends with a summary of tip for taking charge.

The chapter layouts come across rather messy and even unstructured throughout the book (something that easily could be improved for the next editions). Do not let this element stop you, as the actual content itself is really good in giving a good overview on what product management is about.

In this rather small book of 230 pages the author does a great job to cover all the elements needed to get (new or existing) product management started (and going). The book is just so rich in tips and tricks that all can learn a lot more (or just that little bit extra) on product management.

Content-wise this is a very solid book...a great introduction or refresher. I loved reading it.

Contents:

Chapter 1: Your mission, should you choose to accept it
-Minting product managers
-What exactly is product management?

This was exactly what I needed. Our group is going through a transition and having a book that details the right way to do things was invaluable. What was so unique was Geracie was actually teaching through a fundamental tool that all product managers should know, "the user persona / user story". You don't really recognize it until you are a majority of the way through the book, where you have the realization that you were just walked through a user story of the role that you are playing in real life. If only more text books were like this, I think learning would be easier, more relevant, and much more enjoyable. This was especially helpful and more relevant as we transitioned to Agile - using the user story.

Besides the unique format, Geracie's depth on certain topics makes this an essential read. For the first time, someone finally recognizes the different Product Management roles and how they change relative to the size of your company - yes size does matter.

I found it refreshing that tips and tools were provided through each step of the Product Management process. My only problem reading this book was that I wish I had this book 10 years ago when I had started my career. Having a mentor in a book is invaluable.

Take Charge Product Management is the ideal book for someone starting out in product management, is interested in what a product manager should do, or is a product manager looking to refresh their understanding of the role they perform on a day-to-day basis. Written in a easy to follow manner, the book describes the journey of Sean who embarks on his journey as a product manager at a hypothetical organisation, Alpha Ventures, and how he handles his new role. The book is full of valuable tips and tricks that should prove valuable even to the most hardened product managers out there.

Highly recommended.
