The idea is nothing new, a series of tactics exercises, but the simple layout and interesting positions make this book a joy to work through.
The emphasis of course is on the endgame but working through these exercises will improve tactical ability in general. Just work through the book again and again until the solutions can be spotted instantly.
The layout is straightforward, at least on my Android tablet, with the exercise on one page and the solution on the next. This simple format allows the reader to concentrate fully on the positions themselves.
This is a hugely enteraining and worthwhile book, compiled by someone of mid-club level for an audience of his peers AND enjoyed by friends of far higher strength, too.
Especially on kindle, it's a great bedtime read. I've gone through all 300 positions several times.
My only gripe is that some of Asim's analysis (in 4 or 5 positions) doesnt consider best play by the defender. As a player in his target audience, this actually helps me because of the need to test my own appraisals to confirm they're best play,

This is definitely not a book for the advanced player, unless of course he wants to skim through a few dozen problems very rapidly to keep his eye sharp, but for someone of my level it's very helpful and instructive.
K. Kris Loomis is the author of How to Sneak More Yoga Into Your Life and several short fiction collections.
The formatting is straightforward: puzzle on one page; puzzle repeated on next page with solution. Good work.
The problems are run-of-the-mill: double attacks, lots of "R x minor piece" followed by "knight fork". There are a few interesting pawn positions. A common theme is trading a lot of pieces into a pawn ending that is won. This is more of an exercise book (stuff you should see all the time) rather than a book of rare and beautiful positions.
Not enough "play and draw" or defensive problems.
The hardest problems are suitable for players of 1600-1800 strength.
I really like the format of this ebook where the problem is on one page and the answer is on the next. Also, he repeats the original diagram on the answer page with an arrow indicating the first move of the solution so you don’t need to move back and forth between the answer page and the problem page – a nice touch!
I also like the fact that the difficulty of the tactics increases as you progress through the book.
The thing that sets this book apart from other tactics books is that it focuses entirely on the endgame whereas other tactics books pretty much deal only with the middlegame. There’s nothing wrong with focusing on the middlegame, but it’s nice to have a book that focuses entirely on the endgame.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly!
