Landon Stone? Yes please!

Landon Stone has it all. Successful career, beautiful devoted wife, financial security.... Until one incident causes a ripple effect and everything is gone. In an instant. Just like that. So what does he do? He heads home to lay low at his parents house for a while, until he can figure out his next course of action.
I really felt for Landon. He was a nice guy. He didn't mess around, he was devoted to his wife (his childhood sweetheart), and very trusting. I was so angry for him when everything started to unravel, I wanted him to rise above it and move forward, and to find the happiness he deserved. So when he met Autumn I was rooting for the pair of them!

Autumn had a pretty hard time in school. She didn't fit in with the 'popular' kids and was the target of cruel bullying. As a consequence she has confidence issues but is blossoming into a beautiful woman. She works for Landon's mother in the local bakery. She knows Landon, she remembers him from school. I mean, who wouldn't? He was the star football player, local boy done good. Everyone knows Landon. He doesn't remember her though. When he first sets eyes on her, he is intrigued and determined to get to know her.

The story is told from both points of view, so its easy to know what each of them is thinking, and I could understand Autumn's hesitation after reading about what she went through at school. She was wary of Landon, of his motives. In her mind she's still the girl from school all those years ago. She's very insecure and guards her heart very carefully. It's clear that there is a connection between the two of them though. Landon is attracted to her physically, but also as he gets to know her, he loves her down to earth attitude.

This is the debut book of Ms Duncan although she has written previous books as part of a writing duo. I like her writing style and this book re-iterates this for me.

Landon was at the top of his football career until fate stepped in and wiped everything he thought he had right from under his feet. He returns to his home town to live back with his parents and it’s here he meets Autumn but not for the first time as he is astounded to find out.

Autumn works at Landon’s Mom’s bakery and knows all about the famous Landon returning home. It is with some trepidation she meets him face to face for the first time in over a decade. They used to go to the same high school but Landon does not recognise her and Autumn doesn’t want him to, otherwise it will reveal who she used to be and a time she will never get over from the traumatising period in her young life.

However the past is revealed and with surprise on both sides they resolve any misgivings each have and a relationship develops much to Autumn’s shock. She still holds the insecurities from the past that will not let go of her and that continue to impede her present and future. She cannot believe that the gorgeous and handsome football star would ever look at her, let alone want to date her.

I really loved both characters and I believe a lot of women will recognise a part of themselves in Autumn. I did feel for her but at times I felt she was a little too over the top in her relapsing into her past self. I totally got she went through an horrendous school life subject of bullying but this was someone who had then gone on to develop a career and transform herself. Surely the insecurities would not still be so deep after all these years?

So this was the first book by Rachael Duncan I have read and it only wanted to make me read more. I'm currently reading along the theme of sports romances and although this strictly isn't the case with this book....only a small part is about Landon being a quarterback.....this sweet and amazing story about Autumn and Landon blew me away. I was Autumn at school and her character spoke volumes to me and I was so impressed at how Rachael wrote her character and explained her perceived flaws and how her high school experience had left her a quiet, self-conscious and damaged young woman who despite her own thoughts was actually very beautiful. Landon is written beautifully and his constant support and amazingly sincere and heartwarming words and actions with regards to Autumn just had me melting for him and cheering him all the way.

This is a sweet romance with some beautifully thought out and written characters, certainly a book to read and keep for those days when you need a bit of a boost from the nasty words and actions of the world outside so you can be swept away with the honesty and special relationship expressed in this book. I know I will be re-reading this book again and again as it has all the perfect elements needed - it made me laugh, cry, get mad and cheer all in the space of a few pages. I loved the way the book ended as I am often frustrated when an author leaves characters in limbo and readers begging for more with no real chance of an author following through with another book. This is a stand alone with a HEA and one I am very happy with.
