About the Author

Richard McAfee has a lifelong commitment to table tennis. In his early years, McAfee was a successful player winning many singles and doubles events, including the 1972 U.S. Open Class B Championship and the Southern Open Men's Singles title. Later McAfee began to focus on his true passion of coaching. He has coached national champions in each of the past three decades, seven world-ranked players and two Olympians. In 1994 McAfee was named competition manager for Table Tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. This led to further management positions on the international scene and earned him the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Merit Award. He is also certified by USA Table Tennis as a national-level coach, their highest level. Honours include the 2004 U.S. Olympic Committee Doc Counsilman Science Award for table tennis, the 2003 Georgia AAU Coach of the Year award for table tennis and the 1999 U.S. Committee Developmental Coach of the Year Award for table tennis. McAfee was inducted in to the U.S. Table Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005.

Reading books obviously can not substitute practice, but theoretical understanding helps in building up skills.
This book presents a step-by-step strategy for developing your game, starting from the most basic strokes and continuing with more advanced ones and adding important aspects as footwork, game strategy and competition preparation. It is well written and illustrated.
I would recommend it to anyone at beginner to intermediate level that wants to improve their game.

I've bought quite a few table tennis books over the years and this has been the least useful. But to be fair any book that tries to tell you how to technically play a shot or do a serve with stills and text is going to fail. The only way to learn to play a shot is to watch video or get a coach. This book goes into way too much detail and as a beginner would put me off trying to learn. Some of the drills that are in this book would not help you improve at intermediate level because they don't replicate real match situations. Just stick to books that help you improve your tactics once you've reached a consistent standard.

After many years of wanting a table tennis my husband finally treated himself to one along with this book. It is an excellent book with good illustrations. Even our nine year old enjoyed reading it too. Great tips to help with your technique etc.

This book is an excellent buy for someone starting out teaching table tennis. The book deals with techniques, skills and tactics from the beginner level to a fairly advanced level. The contents can easily be transcribed into schemes of work and weekly teaching objectives. I really enjoyed the read having taught PE for 40 years but not specifically teaching table tennis.
