Despite being a fan of Darren's previous work with Hefner, i bought this CD with some trepidation as i had found the French to be a bit of a letdown (don't get me wrong, i'm one of the Hefner fans who liked "Dead Media", but the French were just too much). However, i shouldn't have worried as this record is rather lovely. It's not a step back to the old Hefner sound, instead a step forward incorporating elements of all eras of his work into a rather cohesive whole.

This is the first solo album released by ex-Hefner singer Darren Hayman. Reviews seem to compare it to early hefner, but I think somewhere in between Hefner and Darren's last band "The French" (but without keyboards) is more accurate.
Highlights are a re-recording of the single "caravan song", "protons and neutrons" (originally recorded for the french), "perfect homes" and "table for one" (the albums best track). The last two could easily have been on any hefner album. The other songs aren't immediate by any means, but persevere and they become classics. Unfortunately the album is let down by a couple of songs which are piss poor at best ("the national canine defence league" in paticular).
Overall an excellent album, although one you are going to have to listen to a number of times to fully appreciate. It will definitely be in my top 5 albums at the end of 2006.

I agree with the previous reviewer with all matters except the quality of the track "National Canine Defence League", which I think is one of the stand outs.
In fact, having listened to this album every day for over a month now, I can't find any song which is anything less than excellent, and my favourites change from day to day - a sure sign of a winner.
This all makes me think Table for One may well be the best album Darren Hayman has ever recorded. It is certainly up there musically with the first three Hefner albums, but with, er, subtler lyrics.
In short I would be surprised if there is a better album released this calender year. It is that good.

Darren Hayman is one of the few indie stars who has made the leap from
band member to solo artist. The desert menu is another reminder that there
is much more the mr hayman than Hefner. The opening track is taken from
the classic album table for one, and has some blistering guitars. Also
found within this little gem, is the soft and pretty song short skirt, and lets not forget the buzzcocks style stomp of something I could never be. The desert menu is a winner compliments to the chef
