Product description
Product Description
TP-Link's TL-WDR3600 is a performance-optimised simultaneous dual band wireless router combining the blazing fast speeds of 300 Mbps using the crystal clear 5 GHz band and 300 Mbps using the traditional 2.4 GHz band. With simultaneous dual band, users have 600 Mbps of total bandwidth to power numerous bandwidth intensive applications at the same time around a large home or office setting. With five Gigabit ports and 800 Mbps+ hardware NAT, your wired devices will have lightning-fast, lag-free connections. In addition, two USB 2.0 ports are capable of sharing flash storage, printers, ftp servers and media players, so users can power a robust home media network.
The TL-WDR3600 broadcasts and receives both 2.4 and 5 GHz connections simultaneously at 300 Mbps per band. Like two wireless routers in one, this allows users to run day-to-day applications - such as e-mail and web browsing - over the 2.4 GHz band, while using bandwidth intensive or latency sensitive applications - such as streaming HD video or playing online games - over the clearer 5 GHz band. Both bands at the same time, both at 300 Mbps.
The TL-WDR3600 is able to support a robust and extremely fast wired network, ideal for latency-sensitive applications such as HD media and online gaming. With a built-in Gigabit Ethernet switch and a Hardware NAT function, the wireless router provides powerful data processing capabilities. It's NAT WAN to LAN throughput can achieve up to 800 Mbps+, allowing users to unleash the full potential of their networks.
The TL-WDR3600 supports IP QoS (Quality of Service), allowing optimum utilisation of bandwidth and offering bandwidth control over congestion, preventing bandwidth abuse. This allows users of a small network to receive committed and specific bandwidth, preventing non-critical applications from degrading network performance.
The TL-WDR3600 features Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) that allows users to almost instantly setup their security simply by pressing the "WPS" button, automatically establishing a WPA2 secure connection. Not only is this faster than normal security setups, but more convenient in that you don't need to remember a password. The device also comes with a CD featuring an Easy Setup Assistant that leads users through the setup process step-by-step, and even helps with wireless network settings and security configurations. With setup being this easy, even novice users can have their networks up and running in mere minutes.

On the bad side, it seems to lose WiFi functionality after 2 weeks or so, requiring a reboot. To their credit TP-LINK do release firmware upgrades for the unit, and a previous firmware did cure this WiFi anomaly, but in the latest one I have experienced some of the old grief. But to be fair, flicking the mains switch every 14 days or so isn't exactly a chore.
I ordered on Thursday and it came on Monday. Set up was incredibly simple. Just pop the supplied mini-CD into your optical drive and follow the instructions. Very simple.
This is my first day using it and it seems perfectly acceptable. I think I'm getting just a little more range than I did with the useless Home Hub and this router has 2 USB ports which is great for file sharing around the home and I have already set up the media server which was again, very simple to do.
Some reviewers have complained that the web interface for the router is unattractive or too complicated but honestly, it is all laid out in an easy to use manner and I had no problem configuring it to my particular needs.
This makes it incompatible with any ISP that use BT's WB(M)C product (21st CN ADSL and FTTC). It might still work with Sky or TalkTalk but I have my doubts. In any case the only UK ISPs that currently support IPv6 are both using dual-stack PPP so basically this router - even with the latest firmware as of September 2013 - is not IPv6 ready for the UK in my opinion.
Their support people are aware and know what they have to do to address this but I have no real idea if or when the firmware will be appropriately upgraded. That's no way a show stopper given how irrelevant IPv6 still is but worth knowing.
Putting the Superhub into modem-only mode and plugging this in as my wifi router has made a huge difference. The wifi signal is now very good throughout the house, the speed of connection and (maybe seemingly) wifi speed is also faster. The icing on the cake is that the problems with SONOS have almost completely gone away.
I would strongly recommend this to anyone in a similar position.
