So let's look at this as a whole system....
Management software
The management software 2.5.3 can be run on linux (I got mine to run on a raspberry pi). Anything above it requires windows - which is frankly ludicrous. It's mongodb and basically java/tomcat - that should be able to run on linux.
Currently it's at 2.6.0 now and rebranded to 'omada' or something.
---------
As of 2021-08 this is now on version Omada 3.2.14 and I am running this on a VM. This has support for DFS/TPC channels on v3 hardware ONLY.
V4 of the omada software ONLY supports v3 hardware.
Hardware
For some reason, it doesn't support DFS/TPC, so it will only support from channels from 36-48.
My airport extreme supports more! (channels 48-64 and also 100-165.)
This does not with v1
Apparently they are looking into it, but it will take some time as it will need re-certification.
----
Update 2021-08
V3 hardware supports DFS (channels 52+)
Support
They are pretty responsive, and have a good grasp of english.
Nice features
A nice option is having the captive portal and be able to assign access time via generated codes.
I have 5 of these units in my house and they work pretty well.
Hardware wise, it's only let down by the lack of channels available to it, but it looks as though most WAP have this issue. They have resolved this as of v3 of the hardware.
Software wise, it's let down by the fact that windows management software versions come out first. This is now resolved.

As money is tight to begin with, though, I still need to find the cheapest, yet appropriate option - and this is how I found myself in TP-Link's entry-level bracket. Reassuringly, the reviews for the EAP115 sounded positive, and it provides the POE functionality that I need in our home setup. I took the leap of faith. So glad I did; strong connection, and setup is so simple I had to double-check that I wasn't missing something.
The web admin back-end is clear and simple yet functional (there's no need for any apps if you just want to manage it via a browser from a computer on your network), and I even found an option here to turn the LED off; very useful if positioned where it may otherwise cause visual interference.
I'm so impressed with the EAP115 that I'll be buying another to replace our ailing (decrepit) Zyxel.
Once you have it set up correctly it works perfectly.
Set up mine in the loft . Get excellent coverage both upstairs and downstairs. Also it can create a single SSID network for both 2.5GHz and 5GHz so all my devices now work with Chrome cast. The connection speed is automatically selected. devices capable of 5GHz automatically select this.
This has been running for a month now without any problem. I havent had to restart it so far.

The instructions are not that clear. For anyone who wants to configure one of these, including a guest network, this is a quick way to do it:
1. connect the AC1750 to its PoE injector (comes in the box) and connect the injector to your LAN and to mains power.
2. log in to your router and see which dhcp address it has assigned to the AC1750 (eg. 192.168.1.20, or whatever)
3. access that address using your web browser
4. log in as 'admin', password 'admin' and follow the basic steps in the initial wizard
5. To set up the guest network select 'wireless' in the menu bar, and then either 2.4GHz or 5 Ghz. Click the little 'edit' button (has a pen symbol) at the right-hand side and change the security to WPA, flavour WPA-2, AES . You will see check boxes for guest network and for rate limiting. Check both boxes, and set sensible upload/download rate limits for the guests, and save.
The rate limiting works well and devices on the guest network can only see the outside world, not the LAN. The only reason I have given it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the first one I bought stopped working after 5 days. That one was sent back and now its replacement seems so far to be working perfectly.
