Can replace a basic internet connection using a cheap mobile sim , dependent on location
I have been using this since May 2024 as my main internet connection in London after having ended my very basic landline connection that cost me £24pm. I have updated to the latest firmware as of November 2024 & am using a £12 pm one month contract 150GB Talkmobile sim that uses Vodafone. I am saving £12 pm as a result. I am getting quite decent results 20-40mbs download dependent on time of day and 10mbs upload ( which I never got when using the landline). I have found it quite reliable, even though where I am the signal is just 75%. You can play around with which radio band to use but I have found it best to let the router choose inspite of not getting 100% signal strength . I don't do any thing that needs fantastic speeds. Mine is the Archer MR500. I had intended to get the Archer MR600 but I made a mistake in ordering. As far as I can see there is little difference between the models. I must say it is nice not being tied to a physical land line which I never used for phone calls. I can use the sim in a mobile if I go on holiday. There is a nice so called "Tether" app that allows you test the connection speed. I have given it "only 4 *" as it would be nice to have a telephone socket. TP-Link does have one that has it this. Not really important. It is "only" 4G but as you can see from the image attached can be fine. I am not even getting 4G+ that uses 2 separate signals to double the speed, where I am.

This is the third TP-Link Archer sim-based router for use on the 4G 'phone network that I've bought for coastal holiday lets over a 7 year period. Note the "coastal", as some coastal areas in the UK can have a "wandering" or weak network. So, it's important to contract with a network provider (eg Sky, Vodafone, 02 or whoever) that guarantees a strong signal where the router's being housed. If your mobile 'phone signal's ok then a data sim from that provider may suit.
Given the decent signal with our provider, these routers have been ultra reliable. The few issues we've had is when guests have meddled during an internet outage (not the router's fault), for example accidentally switching the wi-fi switch off at the rear. Diagnosis for any issue is relatively easy by "reading" the light display on the front panel in conjunction with the online user guide. In terms of signal strength as mentioned above, the TP-Link router won't generally support a 4G internet connection unless the mobile signal strength (indicated by vertical bars on the left of the panel) shows as 3 bars or higher. This model is also 4G+. I can't comment on 5G signal areas the area where ours are sited currently only has 4G.
The router is dual-band and "smart" in so far as it will detect and automatically connect you to either a fast 5.0 GHz wi-fi connection or a slower 2.4 GHz wi-fi connection, depending on the limitations of your device. (Note 5GHz doesn't mean it's 5G. '5GHz' is the frequency broadcast by the router. '5G' just means 5th Generation.)
This router has many more facilities than we require, so do check the specification list. It may be more than some require. For our purposes it's accessible and customisable from a connected internet device (e.g laptop, mobile 'phone etc.). When logged onto it from a local device (e.g. 'phone or laptop) it easily allows the router name and log-in password to be changed from the default setting and - for example -, the wi-fi broadcast strength (and therefore range) can be set as low, medium or high. The various settings and configurations can also be accessed remotely to via the internet.
Finally, the looks may not be to everyone's taste compared with some more modern and simpler routers, but the functionality is excellent.
