Product Description

TP-LINK's Archer C7 comes with the next generation Wi-Fi standard - 802.11ac, 3 times faster than wireless N speeds and delivering a combined wireless data transfer rate of up to 1.75Gbps. With 1.3Gbps wireless speeds over the crystal clear 5GHz band and 450Mbps over the 2.4GHz band, the Archer C7 is the superior choice for seamless HD streaming, online gaming and other bandwidth-intensive tasks. The Archer C7 operates over both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, ensuring amazing wireless performance. Simultaneous Dual Band offers you the flexibility of two dedicated networks - with multiple times the bandwidth for your needs. Simple tasks like sending e-mails or web browsing can be handled by the 2.4GHz band while bandwidth intensive tasks like online gaming or HD video streaming can be processed by the 5GHz band - all at the same time. With 3 external 5dBi antennas serving the 5GHz band and 3 internal antennas serving the 2.4GHz band combined with higher quality antenna technology, you can maintain high speeds across greater distances. This provides you with incredible wireless coverage and reliability from anywhere in your large home or office. With one gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports, speeds can be up to 10x faster than standard Ethernet connections. The Archer C7 is a powerful hub to support a robust and extremely fast wired network.

This is a new model to TP-Link's range and is clearly based upon their N900 model. The major difference here is that this supports the new (and yet to be finalised) 812.11ac standard whereas the slightly older model supports the current, and now fully ratified, 802.11N standard. Although the Archer C7 supports the same 450Mbs Wi-Fi speed at 2.4GHz as the older model, it also offers a maximum of 1.30Gbs (1300Mbs) against 450Mbs when the 5GHz band is used. Potentially a total Wi-Fi speed of 1750 MBs is available, hence the full model name. This should prove to be a dramatic improvement for those using the cleaner 5GHz band as there is less signal clutter from other devices and you may be the only user in your locale. However, although there are several dual band Wi-Fi adapters that support 450Mbs on both bands, there are currently very few that support anything faster at 5GHz. The fastest currently known at the time of review supports 900Mbs and there is only one model that does. This is a similar situation as applied to the early N-type routers which were plentiful but their adapters were rare and hard to find. It changed in due course and the very fast 802.11ac adapters will eventually materialise.

The router's design and remaining features are mostly identical to the N900 apart from the Archer C7 having three internal aerials for the 2.4GHz band and the external ones are dedicated to the 5GHz band. The claimed advantage is that each set of aeriels is optimised for their respective bands and thus the ability to maintain signal strength over greater distances and in adverse situations is maintained, about 20% extra is possible.

It was a good router for the first 6 months, then the wifi connection began to struggle, the internet line drops for no reason (including when writing this review) and items connected using ethernet cables somehow randomly disconnect. The remedial activities are of course painful and something i had hoped to avoided by buying this in Archer C7 in the first place. On my experience, if you need a good router for 6 months only, this is one to consider.
