Here's the instructions on how to install the Gargoyle-Router:
In my case I got a modem from my ISP and it's connected to the TP-Link via the WAN port. My servers and desktop are connected to the switch and then I have two wireless networks. One is the normal way for my family and the other is a guest wireless for my friends or casual visitors without access to my LAN (just internet).
Some of the benefits you will get from this firmware:
- Wireless optimisation. Tweak wifi settings to improve signal and throughput
- Set Quotas
- Bandwidth monitor
- Configure Wireless repeater/bridges
- Set up streaming software for audio/video
- Set Up a VPN
- Install a BitTorrent Client
- Create a Guest Network
- Install server software
- A lot more
Now to the router itself. It is one of the best routers you can buy in terms of cost/performance when using with openwrt or even dd-wrt.
- It has 3 big antennas which improves the signal a lot (I hate the fact that nowadays most of them come without antennas)
- Gigabit switch
- Looks nice
- USB port
- A tad bulky
- Only supports 2.4Ghz
- Provided ethernet cable could be better
The range is good enough for a 10x30M² place (with few competing WiFis).
The antennas are detachable and good. the plastic is ok. The LEDs in front aren't too bright (good for using in your room without cover)
You can easily make a cover with modelling cold porcelain.
Now Amazon thinks I am a router collector.
Thanks Amazon... if I ever need to buy hundreds of models of routers I'll come back.
Firstly the unit I received was the blocky white retro device that looks nothing like the spiky black version on the amazon page. It does come with 3 antennae and a UK plug and does appear to be relatively speedy - faster than the cheap Tenda router I used before, with marginally stronger signal strength.
With the primary modem router (TP-Link 8980) set up with an access list of addresses that could access the internet wirelessly, I chose this with the hope that same brand products would play nice together. Unfortunately, trying to set up the router as a bridge out of the box just didn't work. IP addresses were not being allocated and passed to clients connected to this router (wireless or cable), but the bridge itself was reachable via the primary modem router.
Upgrading to the latest firmware also didn't work either.
After several hours of trying different configuration settings I decided to flash it with the DD-WRT open source firmware - which would invalidate the warranty. After following a guide on setting up a DD-WRT bridge and virtual wireless service over the SSID it finally worked.
Given the low price, this could almost be forgiven, but as the custom firmware invalidates the warranty and the complexity of the configuration required to get the bridge working being beyond the expertise of the average technophobe, I can't recommend this product if you want an easy to use bridge router.
However, if you are fine with losing the warranty, and playing with MAC, IP, subnet and gateway addresses holds no fear, then by all means give this cheap solution a bash. The DD-WRT firmware looks incredible powerful, if networking is your thing.
I would suggest doing more research into more convenient products - I lost most of a day setting this up.
If you just want a straight cable router, then feel free to add 1-2 stars to the rating.
