Product Description

Product Description

The TL-SG1008 8-Port Gigabit desktop/rack-mount switch provides an easy way to make the transition to Gigabit Ethernet. All 8 ports support auto MDI/MDIX so there's no need to worry about the cable type. Moreover, the innovative energy-efficient technology means that the TL-SG1008 is the eco-friendly solution for your business network. Featuring 8 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, the TL-SG1008 greatly expands your network capacity, enabling instant large file transfer. This switch can greatly expand your network capacity with much less power. It automatically adjusts power consumption according to the link status and cable length to limit the carbon footprint of your network.

When a computer or network device is off, the corresponding port of a traditional switch will continue to consume considerable amounts of power. The TL-SG1008 can automatically detect the link status of each port and reduce the power consumption of ports that are idle. The TL-SG1008 also analyses the length of the connected cable and adjusts the power usage accordingly, rather than keeping the power consumption in a conventional solution.

The TL-SG1008 features non-blocking wire-speed architecture with a 96 Gbps switching capacity for maximum data throughput. An 8K MAC address table provides scalability for even the largest networks. It also supports 802.3x Flow Control for full-duplex mode, and back pressure flow control for half-duplex mode alleviates traffic congestion and ensures reliable data transmission.

The auto features of this gigabit switch make installation quick and hassle-free, no configuring is required. Auto MDI/MDI-X crossover on all ports eliminate the need for crossover cables or uplink ports. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance. The compact size makes it ideal for desktops with limited space, while it is also rack mountable, convenient and safe. Dynamic LED lights provide real-time work status display and basic fault diagnosis.

I normally have reservations when a glowing review is posted within days of receiving a product, I suspect that often the user hasn't had chance to properly evaluate the product. Which is why I'm posting this now, ....after it's been through the mill!

I bought this on the 1st November 2010, as part of an upgrade of a 10/100 network to Gigabit (1000). After unpacking, I simply plugged it in, connected the LAN cables and that was it. No fuss, no noise, no problems. Note: Important to use at least Cat 5e cables to ensure full speed potential, I use a mix of Cat 5e and Cat 6 - The Cat(egory) rating is marked on the cable sheathing.

Speed throughput improvement was very noticeable, which is what I would have expected anyway. I particularly like the built in power supply, no adapter/transformer to add to the already over-stocked collection. Just needs a standard 'kettle' power lead, which comes with it, as well as extension plates if you want to mount it in a rack.

It's been working happily and reliably ever since, totally silent, doesn't get over hot either, (but then I do keep it in a well ventilated area, and I suggest you do as well). Mine has weathered countless power cuts, switching on and off in rapid succession. It just works!

Up to buying this TP-Link switch, I was always a Netgear man, and always bought the metal version, never plastic. This TP-Link 8 port switch is of course also metal and just feels good quality; but at half the price!. Needless to say, after this I'm trying to think of a reason why I would ever buy a Netgear switch again....?

I bought this device over a month ago, arrived well-packed.
It works as advertized: no set-up, just plug in the router and any other machine and it all just works.
Got transfer speeds between 2 computers of 50 Megabyte/second, though most likely limited by the internal bus speed of the other computer than by the switch.
It also doesnt get hot at all while using 5 of the 8 ports, we'll see how that goes in a small lan party :)

I have two of these on my home network - one running the downstairs ethernet, the other upstairs.

Considering these are turned on 24/7, they are not even running slightly warm, and between them, they are running 12 separate connections.

This unit is plug and play - plug it into the mains, plug in your cat5e cables, and away you go.

If you are still hesitant on buying this, remember this ... it is whisper quiet, totally silent.

A great switch with a built in power supply. Very efficient, produces no noticeable heat, no noise, just plug it in and everything works!
A bit bigger than most desktop switches as its 1U height (and comes with rackmount ears, should you need them). I do prefer the activity LED's being separate from the RJ45 sockets though as it's easier to see them. Has a 240v IEC mains socket on the rear, so no external power supply needed.

This is a TP-Link 'Professional Line' product, so comes with a lifetime warranty!

I've had this switch running continuously for 2 months now (connected to TP Link TL-ER5120 Gigabit Load Balance Broadband Router ) and it's performed every bit as well as I could have wished. It really is just plug in a go. It doesn't seem to mind about mis-matched cables and I'm achieving PC to PC transfer speeds of around 92MB/s. The unit is very well constructed in a metal case and doesn't seem to become even slightly warm to the touch, despite the built in transformer. For the price it is a fabulous piece of kit :)

Excellent switch for home use just plug in and your away...nothing extra to do. The internal transformer means not another transformer in the power supply cable. Does not need a fan and does not have one. Only reason 5 stars not awarded is the slight issue of cables plugging into the front panel. So its better concealed in a cupboard or behind a chair for example.

Amazing high quality build for such a low priced piece of kit.

Having given up on wi-fi, (overcrowded with neighbouring networks) we decided to go wired for all the AV equipment, and bought this to manage the traffic. Superb job. Streaming 5 movies over 5 devices no more pausing or glitches ... remaining wi-fi has improved as well. All in all, a few (easily hidden) flat ethernet cables, and this box, saved £100's on wireless repeaters.

could not be simpler. I have wired a home network and connected to this switch via patch panel. It is currently running BT vision, PS3, a NAS drive laptop and router plugged in. Not tested the transfer speed but no issues at all. Lots of flashing lights - combined with the modem, router, NAS it could be irritating if in the wrong place but mine is in the kitchen so no worries
