1) Connect both adapter on same wall socket if possible so you don't have to run across the rooms (see attached picture)
2) Connect one to the broadband router (A) and 2nd to your laptop (B) (turn off wifi at your laptop)
3) Turn the switch on for both adapters
4) After doing above steps within 2-5 seconds my laptop got connected to internet and I could browse without any issue
5) If you want to Secure these adapters then you will have to do pairing between the two by pressing and holding for 2-5 seconds the pair button on Adapter A and then do the same on Adapter B and that's it
However, these were my first set of home plug adapters and I am pleased with them. No configuration, no fuss, just plug in and go. They come with a good diagnostic tool which scans and reports on all the powerline adapters on your network, regardless of brand. You can see the speeds and line quality and these get anything between 50-120Mb on our wiring. So on paper that looks like they would hardly beat wireless G but in practice they are about 3x quicker than transferring stuff over wireless between the same computers i.e. Home server to kids PC copying large file circa 2-3MB/s shown in Windows 7 dialog, 6-7MB/s with these adapters, even home server to PC directly on 100Mb LAN is only 10MB/s so its pretty respectable.
They are small enough to sit side by side with other plugs and adapters so you don't lose 2 plugs because they overlap or anything. They don't get that hot and up until this year were totally reliable. One of my pair just stopped working without warning or obvious cause. They have a THREE year warranty with TP-Link but being the good shopper I went back directly to my retailer (Amazon). I knew about 60 day returns policy before contacting but thought they might be able to assist and I mentioned my consumer rights in my email...Nah, please enjoy this automated email from India repeating the policy and telling me to go elsewhere...I filled in their call feedback form and complained...nothing.
I contacted TP-Link directly and actually ended up speaking to a nice chap in China who asked if I contacted "my retailer", I told him it was Amazon and I didn't need to say anymore. TP-Link sorted everything out and I had a brand new boxed replacement unit by courier, in 2 days of returning the old one, very professional. They say it's only when things go wrong you find out how good a company really is, so TP-Link pass the test with flying colours...Amazon, not so much this time, but hey, rules are rules.
Despite one defective unit I would definitely buy these again, they are great value and TP-Link's 3 year warranty is good.
I had a set that failed just past year 1 (purchased in 2011), Amazon replaced them for me (after arguing my case about them being faulty and having issues). Now the replacement is dead, although that lasted just past 3 years (replaced in May 2012). There aren't big enough vent holes and the capacitors I assume are the cheapest and hence the lowest lifetime. TP-LINK products are marketed professionally so it all looks fine and dandy, but there are quite a few issues and niggles that you only find out after owning them. Stick with Devolo if you want quality.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Great for bridging the gap between devices
Good powerline adapters, they were very easy to use and set up. I would recommend installing the software to use and control the passwords on the adapters if you're worried about privacy.
I had my plugs set up with one downstairs connected to the router, and on the 1st floor the other plug was connected to my PC. Although the instructions state they won't work very well if they are on different rings in the house, mine worked fine. The best speed I could achieve through them was about 50mbps when there wasn't alot of interference through the wires. Just remember that your mileage may vary.
I noticed that the throughput would be lowered when certain devices were plugged in and being used. These devices are the types that generate a lot of electrical noise and dump it back in the mains, like hairdryers, phone chargers and power adapters/converters.
Hopefully the technology improves in the future to combat these issues but overall it's a great product that has served me well without frustration or lack of connection.
First off the cosmetics; These look amazing and are extremely non intrusive and slim line. The LEDs may get annoying to some people if for example they are being used in a dark room, but this has never really bothered me.
Secondly reliability: For the 3 years of constant use I've only ever had a handful of issues in particular network drop outs.. simply remedied by turning off/ turning back on - this has only ever happened a handful of times.
Thirdly performance: Easily achieving 100Mbps+ every speed test I ran so no issues here.
Overall I would recommend to any home user who wants to avoid the nasty WIFI radiation :)
