I travel a lot in my job and get fed up with poor quality hotel wifi connections so this little unit is the answer to my prayers. This will be my second TP-link portable router and I find TP-Link products are always well made and easy to use.
What is it
This is a portable battery powered wireless router. Power comes from a built in lithium ion rechargeable battery that can charge from a USB socket or via the supplied main adapter. It comes with a mini installation disk, USB lead, mains charger, battery and Ethernet cable.
The unit is made of strong shiny plastic and should be more than capable of handling the daily knocks and bumps a unit like this would encounter. It is quite small and will easily fit into a laptop side pocket etc.
The unit has 4 modes of operation.
3G router mode
In this mode the unit operates as a 3G router when connected to a 3G device. The wireless signal is broadcast from the device through the TL-MR3040 so that other devices can pick up the signal. Useful for connecting 3G mobiles.
WISP Client router mode
In this mode (Wireless internet service provider mode) it act just like a normal wireless modem and allows users to connect wirelessly. It works very well.
In this mode the TL-MR3040 connects to a wired network and transmits the networks signal wirelessly around a room. Ideal for use in hotel where the signal is poor. Tried this today and it was excellent, no dropped connection and I could move my laptop around without any problems.
In this mode the TL-MR3040 is connected to a wired router to turn it into a wireless one. To try this I attached it to an old wired router I had and a strong wireless signal was picked up all around the house.
This is a versatile unit which should be in everyones laptop bag as it is so useful. It makes up for weak signals in hotels and allow you to move freely around without cables dangling from your laptop etc. IN practice the battery give around 4 hours of reliable connection before needing a chnage.
A great device and well worth the money - I agree with another reviewer it would be nice to have included a slip case for it but it's still a 5 star device as it does what it is supposed to do with the minimum of fuss.
I mostly use the Travel Router (AP) mode, which is used to transform a hotel's wired network into a wireless one (in access point mode) or you can boost/extend an existing hotel's wireless network, using the bridge or repeater mode.
The 3G/4G router mode also works well. I haven't used it extensively. but it's compatible with LTE/HSPA+/UMTS/EVDO 3G/4G USB modems. I use the TP-Link MA180m, which works flawlessly.
Wireless Router mode is simply used for connecting to a standard wired ADSL or cable modem, creating a wireless network.
Lastly, WISP Client Router mode allows this router to connect to a Wireless ISP and share the internet with multiple users. This is one mode I haven't yet used, mostly because this is the first time I've heard of WISP and I believe I'm not within range of a Wireless ISP.
The overall wireless coverage provided by this router is excellent and so far I've experienced zero drop outs. The battery is charged via USB and provides around the advertised 4 hours using Wireless N, although a slightly longer battery life would be nice.
Overall, if you travel alot, then this is an extremely useful and versatile router that I can easily recommend.
It might seem a strange deployment, but to me it makes sense. When friends and family are around on a camping trip, with everyone's smartphones and tablets that people refuse to leave at home, having a collective means of internet access via a single USB broadband dongle has proven to be a bit of a boon. The battery-powered element of this device hasn't been totally used to it's advantage, as we happened to have a mains hook-up on the pitch we used, but that's not always the case, so a 2 hour battery life is likely to be used on future trips, which adds a degree of flexibility to this device that I can certainly appreciate.
I haven't had much prior dealings with TP-Link, but this device has proven decent quality and easy enough to set up and use for someone with good IT skills.
Recommended provided you fit the niche that this product likely appeals to and at not too steep a price.
It has more functions than you can shake a stick at.
For starters, it can be powered either through USB cable & Charger, or built in battery.
You can then decide what function you'd like it to carry out.
With the flick of a switch you can either turn a USB 3G or 4G dongle into a Wifi hotspot, use it to connect a non wireless device to a Wireless network with a LAN cable, or turn a wired only network (like they have in some hotels) into a wireless network for all of your devices.
The GUI is reasonably pleasant and easy to use, and there is a good range of features including DDNS.
Battery life is about 2.5hours, so could be better but is enough to dig you out of a hole perhaps.
