I was supplied with a V1 product, and I downloaded the Windows 10 driver package for that from the TP-Link site; I never bother with CDs supplied with peripherals. When I ran the software I opted to install just the driver, not the configuration utility. In case it helps anyone, it was then a matter of going to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings. On this screen all the computer's network adapters are shown, where I switched off the internal card by right-clicking on it and selecting Disable. Right-clicking on the new adapter, it shows as TP-LINK wireless USB Adapter, allows it to be enabled and it's then just a matter of selecting a wireless network from the drop-down list and entering the security key.
With the old WiFi card I was getting a link speed of 72Mbps, now I see in excess of 400Mbps, which makes no difference to my internet connection because our BT friends only squirt 17Mbps down my phone line, but it has transformed my file transfer times and that was the object of the exercise. If anyone doesn't know how to check their WiFi link speed, just right click on the adapter in the Change Adapter Settings screen referred to above and select Status.
Downsides? Well obviously it means losing a USB port, and having the stiffish USB lead permanently poking out the side of the computer is less than convenient, especially if it obstructs your mouse pad. But the arrangement will suffice until I upgrade the laptop, it's a cheap solution and I recommend it.
EDIT: After I few days use I found I was frequently getting the dreaded (but common) "An unexpected error has occurred" message when transferring files. To cut a very long and frustrating story short, I've overcome that by using the T4UH on the 2.4Ghz band only, reducing my link speed to around 300Mbps. Oh well, it's still better than it was.
I've got superfast cable broadband and until now have only had access to 2G band via my old wifi dongle. That did its best and maxed at 144MBPS at 100% reception (router in lounge downstairs, PC and wifi dongle upstairs bedroom).
With a recent upgrade in speed from my broadband supplier, I decided I needed a new dongle that could access the 5G bandwidth with the faster speeds. Initially tried a BrosTrend AC600 which, although it could access both 2G and 5G, the speeds were never close to my old apparatus.
Today the TP-Link AC1200 arrived. Plugged in, installed driver + utility and got maxed out / same speed on 2G as the old faithful but now also got 5G at 100% so far maxing at 400MBPS.
Thoroughly recommend investing a bit more money for high quality kit.
If you are installing on windows 10 forget the enclosed CD in package. Go straight to TO link website, and download the latest software if you are able, install the software then plug in the device. I struggled to get it to find the device with the drivers on the enclosed CD. Fortunately as I had an existing connection I was able to do this. If you don't you might want to use another computer to download the driver package to a USB drive and then install it from that.
This is a good product at a good price and once its up and running it works very well.
