Amazon.co.uk Review

The promotional blurb for Codemasters' latest racing game, TOCA Race Driver 2, makes an awful lot out of the in-game cinematics, the wealth of game options and the fancy new damage engine. However, what is also crucial to the game's success is this: TOCA Race Driver 2 plays like a dream. It follows the narrative-based approach of its predecessor, as you become a genuine character in the game. That takes you from the early races where you attempt to make your name, through to the big championships where you then have to prove it. There are plenty of championships to take on, too, and as with the wide selection of vehicles waiting to be driven, these are gradually unlocked as you make progress.

Even in single-player mode, though, the races are genuinely immersive and wildly entertaining. Sure, the game punishes your mistakes, but that's as it should be, and it rarely leaves you at the point where you don't want to have another go after a winning position has gone horrendously wrong. Fortunately, the AI of the computer-controlled cars is pretty much spot on too--they make mistakes, they adopt different driving styles, and only on occasions betray their non-human status. Online, the game is even better. Twelve players at a time can compete and it's here where the TOCA Race Driver 2 is at its most exhilarating.

And then there are the production values. From the stunningly realised cars and courses, through to the tightly woven voiceovers and gloriously cinema-like action replays, it barely puts a foot wrong. Not only then is the game a joy to play, it's also a joy to look at. The only minor niggle is that those who bought the previous game may have wanted a little bit more from the sequel, but that's not likely to stop them enjoying it. TOCA Race Driver 2 is an action-packed, compulsive and long-lasting racing game that's very unlikely to disappoint. --Simon Brew

Half way between a simulator and an arcade racer we have TOCA Race Driver 2. Lots of cars, tracks and types of racing offer although a total lack of TOCA Touring Cars which is odd given the title. Great graphics, sound, no real complaints and the storyline aspect has been given a total makeover and is much improved since TOCA 1.
The vehicle handling is absolutely spot on and just what I expected although there isn't much difference between the types of racing. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing because you can go from one type of racing to the next without too much trouble.
One of the features that really helps this game and needs a mention is redefinable controls. Quite why more X-BOX games don't allow you to set up the controller exactly how you want it is a mystery to me, a big thumbs up to Codemasters for this.
Overall one the best racing games around, if not the best.

Having watched F1 all afternoon I logged onto TOCA2 and went on-line withmy friends - Grand Prix mode was set, first person view was a must. Assoon as the green light goes you feel you're sitting in the cockpit in anactual race. The graphics and frame rate are unbelievable and havingrealistic damage engine ensures you have to take care of your car.Damaging it means you can lose 10-30 seconds a lap and have to pit. Iraced PGR2 for 4mnths and it doesn't come close to being this good.
Buyit, take it on XBOX Live and sit back and enjoy.
Even if your not a bigfan of racing games you'll still love the variety of races and tracks toplay on, and the single player game is great for homing your skills. Italso has free race, time trial and multi-player modes for those withoutLIVE accounts.
Believe me when I say this could'nt get any better.

this game has once again gone to the limits of racing games! the graphics are the best out there by far. the attention to detail is out of this world. the best part about this game is the damage. they have made this mre realistic than ever before. for example is you collide with a wall head on at a high speed your race will be over. this game is full of things to do and unlock. the enables the gamer to play for hours on end! an absolute class game!!!! well worth the money!!!!

This game is the most realistic driving game i have come accross, much more believeble than PGR2. The gameplay is very addictive and i never tired of playing it (having owned it for 2 months now). I think this is due to the many different types of racing available in the game.
One of the best features of the game is the optional setup of the car in each class with the user able to customise suspension, tyres, gears (of which own ratios can be made), anti-roll bar along with front and rear wing settings + a lot more.
This is a game for any racing enthusiast (like myself) who wants a realistic, enthralling racing game. I have not tried a racing wheel with this game but plan to in the near future.

Toca 2 is the Ultimate racer to date and it will take some beating. The speed is awesome, the graphics top notch, the AI is superb and the amount of different championships and races make for a great difficulty curve. The cars themselves are amazingly detailed and the handling is as close as you will get to the real thing. Forget Grand Turismo, get Toca 2 and experience the drive of your life.

Where to begin! this game is an amazing game. the graphics are superb, itfeels awesome and it has so much depth with all the different types ofracing involved. it would have been easy for codemasters to produce anoffering for race driver 2 that was basicly the same generic game as theoriginal race driver but with a few extra cars and tracks and slightlyimproved graphics but no, this game appears to have been developed awayfrom anything to do with the original. the career mode in my opinion, is ahuge step up from the original as your efforts are co ordinated by severalof the in game characters. this means the cinematics between championshipsare better and this improves the way the career follows on. with racedriver 1, if you progressed through the career at a fast enough pace, youwould miss several of the cinematics and therefore chunks of the story.this has been combated through an objective driven career mode, where youneed to complete objectives to progress. the cars are amazing also. thereare something like 30 different racing styles, eaxch with different carsfrom trucks to stock cars to V8 tourers. again it woyuld have been easy tomake each vehicle generic with generic handling etc but again each vehiclehas its own character and believe me, you can tell when you're driving atruck! the circuits have all been re made from the original game and morecircuits have been added along with some that return from toca worldtouring cars such as surfers paradise and leguna seca. the online play issuperb, i have suffered next to no lag and races are very competative. thegame also packages with a free trial of X-box live.Read more ›

I was disappointed with this game, it wasn't what the box said it was "The Ultimate Racing Simulator". This is just too arcade game like, you can tune your car but there are no visuals of the car whilst your doing it, so you're kind of doing it blind. The cras themselves are fairly well produced, although the graphics aren't the best that I've seen. As one reviewer has said it is simply just 15 or so driving games in one box. You can just about use 3 cars per championship on others there is only one. The game itself is quite well done but there is something lacking and it just makes the entire game suffer. Your manager who constantly gives you "advice" whilst you're driving can become very annoying and put you off.
I really hope that this isn't the Ultimate Driving Simulator because if it is then other driving games must be terrible. This game is not better than Project Gotham Racing 2.
