Product Description

What This Product Does
The TL-WA854RE is designed to conveniently extend the coverage and improve the signal strength of an existing wireless network to eliminate “dead zones”, help users maintain an existing wireless network and vastly improve the network’s coverage. With 300 Mbps wireless 802.11n speeds, it is ideal for smooth HD video, music streaming and online gaming.
Range Extender Mode
Range Extender mode boosts wireless signal to previously unreachable or hard-to-wire areas flawlessly. The miniature size and wall-mounted design make it easy to deploy and move flexibly.
Flexible Deployment
The device's miniature size and wall-mounted design make it easy to deploy and move flexibly. What's more, the TL-WA854RE's profile function remembers previously paired wireless networks, meaning there is no need to reset the device when changing the paired router.
Plug and Play
With no new wires or cables, within range of their existing wireless network, users can easily extend wireless coverage at a push of the WPS button on their router, followed by the Range Extender button on the TL-WA854RE or vice versa. An additional push of the pair button can quickly establish an encrypted connection with client devices.
Smart Signal Indicator Light
Five signal lights represent the current signal strength that TL-WA854RE receives from an existing router, which can help to find the right location to place the range extender so that the TL-WA854RE can achieve the best possible range and performance.
Universal Compatibility
Works seamlessly with 802.11 n/g/b wireless devices. It is also compatible with Windows 8 operating system.

Works well in extending the range in our house - and out into the garden. No more dropped connections.
No ethernet connection, so no way to hardwire a PC, Smart TV etc into it - it's wifi or nothing !!!
Set up wasn't as straightforward as hoped. The WPS button approach didn't work for my Virgin Media Superhub 2 so I tried the manual method. You have to be careful here and closely follow the instructions. DO NOT just log into http://tplinkextender.net without first switching wifi networks to the extender's own network. I missed that bit at first and ended up on a dodgy spam site masquerading as the BBC trying to flog me a "cheap iPhone 6". TP-Link should really try and sort out those domain registrations - I'm not the only one to have fallen for this (I didn't buy the "cheap iPhone", mind you).
Successfully logging into the TP-Link extender and following the instructions through a browser did bring results and I am getting a stronger signal in the old dead spots around the the house. A bonus is that it uses the same SSID as your main router so no need to connect to a different network when you wander into a dead spot. And it's not too unsightly - certainly more pleasing to look at than some of those Netgear or Devolo ones. But I'm sceptical how long all this will last having since read other reviews and a couple of forum posts on other sites about folk having connection problems in the longer term with iPhones, etc.
I've also noticed that it only detected and will therefore only broadcast the 2G signal from my Superhub. Reading the pack confirms that it only operates at 2.4Ghz so buyer beware, I suppose.
It works, i suppose. I'm just underwhelmed as I'd hoped the set up process would be very straightforward.
Problems started on the first night (about 1 hour into using it). This is placed downstairs in my kitchen to provide WIFI access to my summer house in the garden as my Virgin Superhub 2 is in the front of the house, upstairs. Now my house is almost like a faraday cage so we battle with WIFI, but this boosted the signal quite a bit on my mobile devices downstairs.
Now for full transparency this device shows its signal strength from the Superhub via 5 led's and mine is sitting on 3 since installation. When in the summer house I set up my Mac (plex server), my laptop, phone and tablet and with all that traffic and requests this just failed... run insde to check and it was just flashing. When it eventually settled on 3 lights again, none of my summer house devices could connect and my laptop REFUSED to connect to the wifi even though no problems were detected.
Not too impressed.
I live in a stone cottage with 3ft thick walls and previously had no wireless in the rooms at the other end of the property to the wifi router. I now have perfect wifi connection everywhere including the garden where I am typing this! Excellent wifi and not expensive. What more can one ask.
