I watched this film one Sunday aternoon in the late 60's and loved it - very touching! I checked it out on Amazon shortly before Christmas and decided to order it. It came very speedily from a small company in Surrey who specialise in old films, so I watched it again whilst wrapping Christmas pressies and I guess it's lost a little of it's charm in the intervening years, but is still a very well acted film nevertheless and one worth having.

In many a review of the "most famous weepy moments in cinema", this film is mentioned, and with good reason.
Unless you are completely cynical, I imagine that you will find this film quite an emotional experience to watch. The growing love between the boy and the yearling are shown in a gentle and often sentimental way. In the 1940s that was often the style. Great acting from Gregory Peck, and Jane Wyman (decades before her Falcon Crest years) also puts in a worthy appearance as the mother. The sets ,the score and the sometimes obvious matte-painted skies all add up to making this a film that I would suggest any parent should show their child. Beautifully made. A nice break from the rat-race of 2009.

This story of a boy and his pet deer touches the heart in many ways. His pioneer family struggles with the problems caused by their isolation, the heartbreak that often did occur in trying to raise a family in their situation, their financial hardship and the vagaries of the seasons. The roles of the parents are sensitively played by Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman, who were never better than they appeared in this film. The little boys who played Jody and his friend are wonderful. Whatever became of them in later life? The only difficulty that I have with this story is that it might be too harsh for younger viewers.
The quality of the DVD is quite good, considering how long ago the film was made - A remake that has been produced in the meantime just cannot hold a candle to it. My only wish is that it had subtitles as my hearing is impaired.

I first saw this film as a boy in the 1960s. It is truely an unforgettable masterpiece. I am buying it for my son. He is 6.
It rates alongside Shane. ( I will also get this one. ) If you are under 40 you probably have no idea what I am talking about.
They dont make'em like they used to.
