I was looking to make an HTPC with an HP microserver and use it instead of an STB. The low profile card certainly came in handy here. The only technical problems i had was intermittent control when I connected it to the motor, which to be fair is probably a failing of the microserver power output and not the card. Overall better than my old Skystar for sure.
The big letdown was the integration with software, i found nothing as fluid as even a basic STB and while xbmc looked great its integration with the backend like VDR and Mediaportal or Myth was just too flakey for me to use as a replacement. I tried on both Linux and Windows and neither suited me. Maybe i will try again when the HTPC software is more mature, and better able to integrate the cards features.
Regards Pete
The card arrived quickly and I proceeded to build my HTPC - adding a Blu-Ray drive for good measure. Card installed with no problems at all. As other reviewers have mentioned, it comes with a flying lead for you to plug separate power into card. Like others I didn't connect this lead and the card seems to work fine anyway. I suspect the lead is only necessary if you are using a motorised head, to line up different satellites, which is being powered from the card. The card will do this via the antenna cable.
I previously had Sky+HD, so already had two cables from a dual head LNB. This made my installation very easy - there are several satellites close enough together to pick up with the Sky dish. If you are starting from scratch, you will need to install a dual head with two cables (you can't just split the signal)to get the most out of this card. Incidentally, TBS also do a quad input card if you are really keen on viewing/recording multiple programmes at the same time. With this card you can view one channel and record another at the same time or record two at the same time if you wish.
With my particular installation, I have a USB DVB-T adapter I use as well, which means I can record two and view one at the same time - not that I have ever needed to. The DVB-T adapter is useful as there are a few TV channels available on Freeview that are not available on satellite - Pick TV being one.
I have not used the supplied software, so I cannot comment on it. Instead I tried Microsoft Windows Media Center (WMC) first, which worked seamlessly with this card, but in the end I have opted for Mediaportal [...] which is a free program, although they always welcome donations. It is an extremely flexible program, but you do need to know a bit about what you are doing in order to set it up and use it. It will allow you to have the card in your HTPC, but have other computers on your network use it as well - might be where the quad channel unit comes in useful?
If you have never built a HTPC before, a word of caution. It is not the same as using Sky or Freesat. Both of them supply their own Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), relevant to their own systems. They are both encoded, I believe, and not therefore easily accessible to you. WMC downloads a lot of EPG information to your system over the Internet, but it is not perfect and tends not to see far enough into the future for advanced record programming. I use a site called Digiguide [...] which gives a huge amount of programme information and for a very reasonable annual subscription will send you regular and detailed programme updates. With Mediaportal, you can use a built in process to import this information (or free alternatives), although you will have to map the data to correct channels. In addition, you will need to look up satellite information, for some channels, on the Internet to scan correctly and find them, as neither WMC nor Mediaportal found them automatically. This mainly applies to the rather few HD channels currently available.
So, I can thoroughly recommend this card. It is reliable, simple and cost effective especially compared to some others.
TBS needs to work toward mainlining their drivers. This closed source nonsense has no place in this day and age. I won't touch their products again until they have and I recommend you don't either.
