I saw Polanski's "THE PIANIST" last weekend, was very impressed and wanted to learn more about the real hero of the movie. I searched online for his recordings. After two days I received two CD's from Amazon related to Wladyslaw Szpilman: One with his beautiful songs sung by Wendy Lands (wonderfully arranged, smooth, some jazzy, some kind of pop, very american-like music, which I love to hear in the mornings) and another one with his original recordings with his great classical interpretations - Chopin ( i.e. the Nocturne from the final scene of the movie ), Rachmaninoff, Bach and his own music - Concertino for Piano and Orchestra composed in the Warsaw Ghetto in a time of deepest repressions by the Germans (I was surprised how optimistic this music sounds). He was a great pianist and composer. After I learned his story through the movie, now I also got in touch with this man personally, through his artistry. Great feeling!!

The film 'The Pianist' led me to read Szpilman's own book, the true story depicted in the film. I was amazed that I could find original recordings of his piano playing. Inspirational.

I watched the film 'The Pianist' twice as it moved me greatly. Adrien Brody won an oscar for portraying this man who watched his entire immediate family put on a train for a German death camp. The heart of the film paradoxically is a scene of beauty transcending terror and deprivation when a German officer finds Szpilman in the building in Warsaw where he is hiding and on learning he is a pianist, orders him to play something. And he plays Chopin. The action pauses as the long piece sounds through the ruined grand salon of the once-handsome building played by a starving, frightened Szpilman for the Nazi officer. I later discovered it was still possible to get hold of original recordings by Szpilman. This is one. It includes some of his own compositions - quite energetic music. My favourite are the Chopin pieces, which I think he plays with great subtlety and sensitivity. His music somehow for me is inseparable from what he went through during the war.

I saw the movie, The Pianist, and it concerned Wladislaw Szpilman, the last Jew in Warsaw, he was the pianist for Radio Poland so this contains 2 versions of Nocterne by Chopin, the last piece he was playing as the Germans took Poland, and the first piece he played after liberation. He truly was a remarkable man and a remarkable pianist. I love the album and was very pleased to be able to get it.
