One of the greatest violinists of the twentieth century, Joseph Szigeti, is captured here with two warhorses of the repertoire, the Mendelsson and Brahms violin concertos. I think it true to say that Szigeti is best heard as early in his career as possible as his technique declined with advanced years. It's probably also true that the recording studio didn't bring out the best in him, either.

So, what we have here are two "live" recordings; yes the sound requires a little forbearance but I think Ward Marston has, as usual, done a splendid job. First up is the Mendelssohn, a concert with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra under Bruno Walter from 2 February 1941, and it's a fine performance.

Then, in quite a reverberant acoustic (Szigeti fades in and out of the aural "picture" here and there), we have the Brahms with the same orchestra under Dimitri Mitropoulos from 24 October 1948, and this is an excellent performance.

A valuable CD, complete with well-written and interesting notes from Abram Chipman, well-worth hearing.

4.0 out of 5 stars a violinist with soul 2 April 2017

I didn't purchase this CD from Amazon. In stead I bought direct from music and arts. The sound is quite good for its age. Szigeti is a violinist with soul. I think you would enjoy this recording as I do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor 24 Mar. 2009
By Santa Fe Listener - Published on
Format: Audio CD
To put this CD on your turntable is to plunge from high hopes to bitter disappointment. Szigeti plays the Mendelssohn Cto. with Bruno Walter (1841) and the Brahms with mitropoulos (1948), but don't let the relatively late dates fool you. The tinny, shrill, cramped sound is too primitive to be listenable, comparable to Edison cylinders from the turn of the century. Music and Arts isn't doing anyone a favor by releasing such a disc, not without a bold warning about the sound for prospective buyers.
