This is a very good reference for the Systems Engineering practitioner. Unlike most books of a similar title, it covers hardware as well as software engineering, and also covers other engineering disciplines accross the whole system life cycle. As the sub-title suggests, Systems Engineering is needed to manage large complex projects, and the book provides good guidelines on the processes and techniqes to achieve this goal. However, the book is pitched at a level that enables it to be scaled down for use on smaller projects as well. Despite the complexity of the subject material, the book is very readable.

As a programme manager moving into the complex world of system engineering I found this book invaluable . . . and still do. It is about the concepts and principles of system engineering which are essential for anyone managing a system engineering based programme or project.By training I am a civil engineer and a colleague from Raytheon once said to me, that civil engineers are natural integrators and it was the "integration and systems thinking" mind set which counts. I just needed to understand the words, paradigm and world of my system engineering colleagues so that the management of the whole effort could be effective. This book helps and I recommend it to anyone looking at systems engineering management. The required mindset and way of thinking has not changed so don't be put off by the age of the book; true some as one reviewer states, more modern examples may help but the wisdom and thinking remain the same.

The book is ok for defining what systems engineering is and what steps are recommended but deals with the subject in a very generalised way. It would be more useful if the content was updated to include more specific case studies and worked examples with recommended methods for practical application as well as the current, very high level process diagrams.
