For the price point it has been a good investment.
Its sitting in my loft connected to a Linksys LGS552P switch and I have set up LACP port aggregation so the NAS has a 2Gbps connection to a single IP address on the network.
(This means connecting both of the network ports on the back of the NAS and using them together as a single network connection but with the bandwidth of both of the individual network connections)
I'm also using a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) so smooth out power spikes with a full sine wave rather than emulated an emulated sine wave.
I initially purchased this after reviewing the specifications hoping it would be ideal for dynamic transcoding of video content for my Plex server.
However after trial and error I just decided to pre transcode the video content over night.
Unless you are using the Synology video station application that uses the hardware accelerator the DS916+ does not really have the horse power to transcode on the fly.
It has been used as a VPN server (IPSEC) and it worked very well.
I am also using it to connect to a record the streams from 5 ONVIF IP cameras.
It records perfectly however the Surveillance station application is like pulling teeth.
The pain or inconvenience is worth the gain though.
If you keep in mind the scope of the use cases you want a NAS for and also consider the price I think you will be very happy with the Synology DS916+.
I am considering purchasing a second DS916+ to put in HA (High Availability) mode as I now rely upon it to store my photos.
If however if I wanted horsepower in a new NAS I would invest a few thousand pounds more and go for an i7 or Xenon based QNAP.
But this is a totally different scenario / use case than the one that would lead my to purchase the Synology DS916+
I think the idea of dynamic transcoding of video streams for Plex is one that sits on the absolute periphery of the capabilities of the DS916+ and realistically if you excluded this from your purchasing decision then I doubt you will be disappointed.
The upgrade was very easy indeed as I would expect from Synology. I had two 6GB drives set up in RAID 1 mirrored config in the previous NAS. Swapping to the new unit was as simple as backing up and saving my config on the DS216, removing the drives and inserting them into the DS916 (Make sure they go in the same bays) and starting up the DS916. Once detected on my network it was a simple case of following the instructions in the Synology auto set up process in my browser. Latest version of Disk Station Manager was downloaded and installed then I uploaded my backed up config file which restored settings including users, shared folders etc from previous NAS. Brilliantly easy!
Nice to see that all the USB slots on the device (2 rear and 1 front) are now USB3 whereas the DS216 only had one USB3 at front.
There is also an SATA slot if you want to connect an external drive.
Disk storage is also expandable via the connection of an additional drive bay (DX513) so if I ever need more than four bays I can add that rather than have to buy a new NAS.
The best feature of all Synolgy NAS devices is the DSM software that comes with it. It is feature rich out of the box and has a very active user community who produce loads of additional apps to use on the device. Have a look at SynoCommunity for more details.
The additional free apps available for iOS and Android are very easy to set up and use. Look for DSPhoto, DSGet, DSFile, DSVideo, DSCloud, DSAudio and more.
I cannot see me ever choosing a different NAS provider over Synology.
Bought the DS916+ 4-bay and installed n=4 3TB WD red's in RAID 10 format. Went for this model as I wanted a hot-swappable capability to prevent loss of media or photo files.
Basic setup was very simple in Win 10 (also working well on Win 7). Once installed checking of the hard drives was completed overnight then another 24 hours to transfer all the files (I suspect my router is to blame for this). This is now working perfectly and streaming media to multiple locations via wifi and Cat 6 cable.
Now the downside - as is often the case the instructions as to which software modules you need to install are woeful (are software people a different breed to us humans? Do they communicate telepathecally or simply understand these systems by stroking them in a special way?). I found help via forums infinitely more useful and eventually installed the required packages to get everything working as I wanted it.
Indexing all the files took quite a while, although given the number that is to be expected.
One minor annoyance. The green LED's on the front are very bright and the slow-pulsing green light when it goes into standby is spectacularly annoying - position this carefully if you want to watch films in the dark.
