I don't read instructions and I've used many NAS devices so in goes a disk (just one for now) and on it goes. A few minutes later it's up and running. Now for a few settings I know I'll want to alter before I port all my existing stuff from the WD MyBook... but where are the settings I need? Eventually I gave in and looked at a PDF user guide I downloaded from Synergy and immediately had a Homer Simpson "duh!" moment - I was so used to the awful user interfaces of things like the MyBook I was looking in all the wrong places. The appearance of the Synology UI should have been a big clue (think "modern computer UI") and anyone who uses a modern computer would have no trouble at all finding stuff - and so would I had I not approached it with preconceptions based on previous experience of other devices. I blame old age... ;-)
As it turned out I had very little to change - unlike any other NAS I've used the defaults are actually very sensible and many users won't need to touch a thing. Everything worked out nicely; I had a backup of the WD MyBook on a USB disk so I plugged this into the Synology and used the nice file manager (which they call a "file station" for some obscure reason) to copy the content into the appropriate places on the new NAS - videos, music, etc - and in a remarkably short time (it's quick!) I was ready to test. Everything worked, no issues at all with my iMac, Android phone and tablet, Finlux TV, Philips music player, Asus O!Play.... Well, you get the drift. It works :-)
Fitted second disk, let it get on with rebuilding the RAID (on default settings) which took a long time but it all happens in the background and doesn't interfere with normal use. Double checked that everything had been copied before re-purposing the USB backup I had used to copy from as a backup for the new NAS. I used the included "Hyper backup" which is functionally similar to Apple's Time Machine, but unlike Time Machine it saves data in a special format which doesn't matter if using it from the NAS, but sounded problematic in the event of catastrophic failure. I needn't have worried thogh - there are free downloadable apps for most computers on the Synology website to allow you to browse and copy data from the backup disk in the absence of a working Synology device. They really have thought of everything; it's a very well-rounded product.
Full five stars from me, and most unusually I can think of absolutely no negatives at all, no matter how minor. Synology have designed an inexpensive NAS which is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally excellent with a well thought out user interface over operating hardware/software with default behaviour matching the vast majority of use cases. Simply outstanding.
The not quite so good. Setting it up was quite the task. You get a diagram showing you how to plug it in and a web address. Type that in and I was told that this web domain is for sale; not very encouraging. I got there are lots of web searches and forums, but what the hell is wrong with a written instruction manual? I don't really care what language, but removing text completely is up there with trains not picking up passengers to avoid being late.
But mostly it's positive it's working right now and I'm about to do my monthly backup.
Had a few broadcast storms on my LAN which made things like DHCP fail. Samsung TV keeps losing it, Samsung tablets can't connect on some apps. But not sure if that is a user issue, the unit, my router or the other devices. So I'll reserve judgement for now on that.
The updates are almost daily. But thats not always a bad thing. Just don't enable all available apps and just have what you need on auto update.
Help site seemed OK when I contacted them. And google has many answers.
In all, This was my first NAS, a good bit of kit, and does its job well for most devices and OS. Recommend.
