High-Performance Multimedia Processing with Smart Energy Management
With a RAID 1 configuration in a Windows® environment, Synology DS213j delivers read and write speeds of over 100MB/sec and 70MB/sec respectively, allowing you to share an entire Blu-ray quality video in less than 3 minutes. The built-in Floating-Point Unit CPU speeds up thumbnail processing to enhance photo viewing at different resolutions, while the large 512MB RAM ensures maximum speed when running multiple multimedia applications.

Not only does it provide a large 92mm fan and smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, but its noise dampening design makes it quiet compared to a public space in a library. Support for Wake on LAN/WAN, multiple scheduled power on/off, and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operating costs.

One down side is the IP address changes every now and then, not an issue for most devices but sometimes the DS app on my Ipad has to be reconfigured to make a connection. Doesn't take long though.
Really worth a buy. I've got almost every device in our house hooked up to our NAS and it is great to have one place to store everything.
The supplied pictorial 'Quick installation guide' is useless - more confusing than helpful. Fortunately, however, set-up couldn't be simpler. The unit already contained two 2TB drives, so I just plugged it in, connected to the network using the ethernet cable provided, and ran the supplied CD on one of the PCs on the network. The Web Assistant launched automatically, downloading the latest firmware and checking the HDDs. That was it.
The DiskStation then appeared as a network drive on all computers on the network (a mixture of Windows OSs). It was also available in FileBrowser on the iPad.
All peripherals should be this easy to use.
It is not the cheapest NAS you will buy - until you consider the amount of time you WON'T waste fixing problems. I am fairly technical but not exactly a "black-belt". I can google solutions and follow fairly technical instructions, but happily with Synology relatively little user input is required to set it up and keep it working. The software is well thought out and works sensibly with mostly default options.
The Synology community is very helpful and if you search and compare complains on Synology against the competition the general satisfaction stands out.
This NAS just works reliably. It was easy to set up, you can access it from anywhere even using apps on iphone or Android.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
I chose to follow this solution for my first-line backups this after the single drive in my supposedly ultra-reliable Western Digital NetStore suffered component failure on the drive's control card and it cost me a small fortune to recover the data from the undamaged hard disk platter.
The Synology is not quite as fast on the 100/1000 LAN as the unit it replaces, and the two 1TB drives combine to only give me 912GB of actual formatted storage, but the peace of mind is immeasurable.
I have designated user areas on the drive (this is not partitioning) for specific purposes, eg Music, Pics, Docs, Backups. The drive allocates space as required and the only limit on any one section is the full capacity of the system. The user areas can have their own access passwords, usually the same as the user passwords on the machines talking to it.
I've not used any of the custom software that came with it apart from the Synology Assistant to get it up and running, which took about ten minutes, most of which was the reading of instructions and checking I was not doing anything silly, and of course the Anti-Virus. System updates are offered on a regular basis, but I choose to apply them manually, and again only for the software I am actually using.
I have carefully not allowed my "Smart" TV or anything else on the LAN to Share the files, because I regard this as a secure store for precious stuff. I have kept it simple and only scanned though the supplied software - all accessible via the PC's web browser after logging in as the DiskStation's administrator.
Power consumption is low and it has options for reducing it further.
The system has fantastic possibilities as an intelligent server for a website or small business, but I don't expect to even touch one percent of them since this for me is purely an archiving system.
So, it backs up my important documents and files,
I can access all photos and videos taken by both me and the mrs through the DS apps on our phones and tablet (the app also automatically backs up our photos and videos to the diskstation with no effort at all)
Videos I can access via DLNA on my smart TV, or if that fails I can push it onto the TV from the tablet or phone app.
I have a RAID 1 set up so I'm hoping I never lose any documents, photos, videos etc ever again.
