What it does, the stability and the price are simply stunning. A couple of years ago I envisaged having to build my own NAS as there was nothing on the market that met the spec I wanted at a reasonable price. This is pretty much the spec that I devised at a price I couldn't build one for along with all the apps to do what I need.
Along with the NAS I purchased two WD Red 2Tb hard drives and implemented Synology's proprietary RAID scheme as default. It runs quiet and cool.
It's been running for 10 days continuously now without a single glitch (I'm probably going to regret saying that now :-).)
Setup was much quicker and easier than I had expected from previous experience with a DS211j, using Synology's new web-based setup which is largely automatic and avoids the need to install Synology Assistant software from the CD. The only thing users need to be aware of is that Synology has WiFi security disabled by default: in order to prevent unauthorised access to your network, WPA2 encryption needs to be switched on and a password set as soon as the DiskStation Manager (DSM 4.1) firmware is installed and running.
Subsequent configuration is easy and intuitive, although users new to NAS in general and Synology in particular will need to do some homework on the Support section of Synology's website. The appropriate DiskStation User's Guide needs to be downloaded, and the SynologyWiki has particularly helpful tutorials for those new to setting up User Shares etc.
Quickly installed 2 3TB WD Red drives - bought as separate purchase from amazon. Easy installation.
I've now got my stuff properly backed up and with regular easy incremental backups configured too.
The Media server functions appear smooth and easy to set up too.
Not tried the Cloud server yet - one thing at a time.
No regrets over purchasing this. Think its an excellent investment to protect my data.
Purchased; separately; Professional SE Drives - Rated above the Reds - (REDS fail quicker than the Pro Versions) see link below.
I am not saying the REDS are a problem - in fact the opposite - they are great - just that the next level up offers longer warranty and a better MBTF and 5 year warranty. I pay more for longer.
The entire Server works fab. Slipped in the Hard Drives.
Network picked it up straight away.
Downloaded all the software from the Synology site - the supplied CD was unreadable and now serves as a plant mat.
Followed easy instructions
I have loaded all legal copies of my films/files/docs onto the Drive - and access it all around the world via the Software supplied - "PLEX"
Must admit I never trust servers - I also keep a local backup on an external Drive.
The rest is history -
OK a year on - just.
Had to reload twice as stuff on the drive was often not available.
It also got so slow - had to wipe and start from scratch.
Is it good - not sure. I have purchased and back up to additional drives - I don't trust it.
DO NOT USE THIS AS YOUR CROWN JEWELS
I also use it as a drop box between my various devices. Which is why I then installed Cloud Station, as that is supposed to provide that functionality in an even easier way.
Main problem I found was when I installed the Cloud Station app on the DiskStation and my iMac. It caused the disks to start filling up. Some kind of problem whereby the DS seems to copy files to the CloudStation directory on the DS, and then seems to be in some kind of loop which means it jus keeps filling the disk up until it is full. Solution was to stop the CS service, and then uninstall it, and now I have recovered the disk space it has used up. Not good though.
Having been in contact with Synology support, it turns out the Cloud Station product is working as it is supposed to. The problem is that it keeps up to 32 versions of a file by default! As I am using the DS as my iMac backup, and have 500Gb backed up, every time a file changes in the backup, it is keeping the older version, for up to 32 versions of these files, and so is filling up my DS disk! Not very smart. The answer is to use an option to limit the number of versions that cloud station keeps.Read more ›
