We plugged the Synology into our network switch, switched it on and followed the very simple instructions. It was easy to map one of the folders to a drive letter on each of our PCs and files were copied across from the old server quickly and easily.
For those of you new to NAS drives (as I was), the DiskStation is basically a little computer with a simple and user-friendly OS which I believe is based on Linux (don't worry, no command line knowledge is necessary, it's all through a pretty point-and-click GUI). The desktop is accessed from another PC on the network via a webpage and has a variety of apps including Cloud Sync which automatically syncs my important folders to Google Drive overnight, and Hyper Backup which automatically backs my files up to a little USB drive I plugged into the back of the Synology. In both cases, the files are encrypted with a password which was important to me as the data was sensitive.
Access to the files from the PCs on our network is like greased lightning. The whole thing worked straight out of the box and I am a very satisfied customer.
I installed a 1tb samsung SSD drive however the speed of this unit was dreadful, very slow at opening apps and running any backups
this was connected to a 1gb ethernet switch and proved no network issues but performing various speed tests on the same lan connection.
in the end i sent this back and swapped for a ds116 which i am over the moon with
This unit may be ok if your just using to backup pictures and watch movies from your PC but really didn't meet my requirements as a backup unit and running a further 2 ip cameras
As pointed out elsewhere, the GUI can be slow to respond at times and the CPU does max out quite frequently when using some of the apps from the browser but for the price paid, this is perfectly acceptable. When backing up my digital photo archive a few months ago (around 1.2TB) I seem to recall that it took around 10 hours to complete this operation. This unit (obviously?) only holds a single disk drive (USB2 expansion excepted), which creates a single point of failure, but this was a cost compromise I was willing to make at the time to allow me to buy more storage.
I'm planning to upgrade my network with a managed switch shortly so I'll also be looking for another, more capable NAS. I won't hesitate to buy another Synology box.
I'd really really recommend paying the extra for the model/s with faster CPU and memory.
I opted for Synology has had high expectations of the software and I do like DSM (the software on the NAS), however I can't say the same for the backup utilities they provide for windows and android (you should check out reviews on Google Play .... I regret not doing this)
The functions of these enclosures are phenomenal. They are not just a NAS enclosure - they're like a mini server. I'm constantly amazed by the functions of it and my DS212 is still running perfectly after all these years.
If you're looking for network storage, look no further than Synology.
