Don Cherry's first BLUE NOTE album 'Complete Communion' featured a quartet with Cherry(cornet), Gato Barbieri(tenor sax), Henry Grimes(bass) & Ed Blackwell(drums). This basic quartet was expanded to a septet for his follow-up, 'Symphony For Improvisers'(recorded on September 19, 1966) with extra musical colour provided by Pharoah Sanders(tenor sax, piccolo), Karl Berger(vibes, piano) & Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark(bass).
As on 'Complete Communion' there are two continuous suites covering a wide range of moods with dynamic interplay and impassioned solos especially from the fiery Argentinian tenorist Gato Barbieri & the "torch-mouthed screamer of the reeds" Pharoah Sanders.
This exhilarating and emotional music is full of life & humanity and 'Symphony For Improvisers' is an overlooked classic of '60s avant garde jazz.

I can't claim to be a jazz buff but as a big fan of the more avant-garde and free jazz players I have to say this is an incredible album. All the players are on top form.

If you're new to the more avant-garde end of things it might take a few listens to get into but it's worth it.
