The Symphonies more than fulfilled their promise. I find that Finnish Classical music is almost invariably more interesting intellectually as well as emotionally than almost any other form of modern Classical music. One of the reasons I suspect if that if one looks at the history of the first half of the 20th Century, Finland's, is one of the more interesting. Starting in 1900 as a modern satrapy of Russia, having previously been dominated by Sweden up until the end of the Napoleonic Wars one finds that Finland's struggles to survive as an independent country, having been involved in the First World War, struggling to find independence from Russian involvement in 1918, the civil wars of 1918-19 and then being invaded by Russia in 1939 and it's subsequent involvement with Hitler and against Stalin are interesting in themselves and far more complex than may immediately appear. Again Russia attempted to invade Finland in 1945 but managed to fight the Russian armies to a standstill and retain it's independence at the end of the second World War. Consider the fate of such countries as Poland, East Germany, Hungary etc., one could argue that they were one of the more successful combatants.

I believe that this seemingly chaotic and violent history has led 20th Century Classical Music to depths which `safer countries' such as the USA and Great Britain have never had to confront. Modern Finnish atonal music, with practitioners such as Kalevi Aho etc., leads to a far more interesting, complex and more deeply satisfying experience than much of the music of this century aspires to, or manages to reach.

A broad collection of Finnish music may be difficult to obtain and sometimes difficult to listen to, but if one wants challenging music rather than the insipid output that much of British music is comprised of, then it is always worth listening to.

HASH(0x9dd91b4c) out of 5 stars but not Merikanto's best music. Check out the Finlandia or Ondine discs ... 12 Aug. 2014

You can see the other review. This is relatively charming, but not Merikanto's best music. Check out the Finlandia or Ondine discs first. Not quite 4 Stars.
