I always thought that Wagner should have written symphonies, but I wasn’t aware that he actually did write one and a bit in his youth. These are strongly Beethoven influenced, with even a hint of Schubert, and actually rather pleasant listening. It just makes you wonder even more, given how good his operatic orchestration was, and how influential he was on Mahler for instance, just how good he could have been in this form. I've given the music 4 stars, which is a bit generous, but 3 would have been harsh. The recording is fine.

HASH(0x8f7d4f48) out of 5 stars Collector's item for Wagner fans 18 Feb. 2010

This is a fine album for Wagner fans who want to check out the composer's non-operatic output. The Symphony in C (written at age 19) may be familiar, and is actually available in other CDs. However, the Symphony in E, Wagner's uncompleted creation from age 21, may not. I decided to opt for this disk for the chance to hear both works in one album.

This CD features Wagner's 1882 revision of the Symphony in C which was performed two months before his death.

Wagner completed the first movement of the Symphony in E but only 29 bars of the second movement. In 1887, a performance version based on these 29 bars was prepared by conductor Felix Mottl at the request of Wagner's widow Cosima. This performance version of the second movement is included on this disk.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and Hiroshi Wakasugi recorded this disk in Tokyo, 1992. I found the performances quite satisfactory and spirited. I thought the engineered sound was very good, too. The liner notes include historical notes, movement-by-movement analyses, and background of the performers. Total time for the CD is 56'51".

HASH(0x8fe9d7e0) out of 5 stars Student Wagner 12 Jan. 2015

I've always had a soft spot for the C-major Symphony, a work of Wagner's late teens. I suppose it's unlikely if not impossible that his models could have been the earlier symphonies of Schubert and the two by Weber, but this piece reminds me of those fine efforts, with memorable melodies and a particularly satisfying, visceral scherzo. Just don't expect it to sound like Tristan. The performance is no better than the old Otto Gerdes for DG, but perfectly well done, and the unfinished E-major torso is an interesting filler. If the symphonies of Arriaga and Voříšek are to your taste, I expect you'll probably find the C-major equally enjoyable.

HASH(0x8fe9d6e4) out of 5 stars Rear symphonies and good performance 16 Aug. 2013

These are the only two symphonies that Wagner wrote. He did not even finish the E Major symphony. These symphonies are not performed by symphony orchestras around the world at least in my over one thousand concerts that I attended. These are his early works but shows things to come in his operas. When it comes to the opera he is closest to what Beethoven was to classic music. I wonder , if he wrote other types of music other than opera, what his music would have been like. His mature symphony would have been great. The performance by Tokyo Met Symphony Orchestra is wonderful.
