The second book in the series has not disappointed. It has a slow start but then the action gets going and you are hooked.

This series has all the elements that I love - intrigue, fighting, strong females and magic. There are plot twists, plot twists and plot twists. Very clever but in a down to earth way.

Looking forward to the next book but not sure how long I will have to wait.

I really shouldn't like this book. It has all the elements of a "me too" book about a thief who's really a hero in some unspecified fantasy city. But they the writing happens and it's all really great. The twists are only mildly surprising but just well executed. The book flows and you can dip in an out really easily.
This basically picks up where the first book left off - Drothe is rapidly thrown into a situation where he has to live by his wits while the Degan's wonder about helping and hindering in equal measure.
There is also the shadow of a really fascinating concept hidden in the background. The story of the continually re-incarnating emporer who has split his soul in three seems really intriguing. So far it's been almost ignored but it starts to play a tiny part in the story here and I'm really hoping it starts to feature in the next book as it's a really interesting concept.

I first read Book 1 many months ago, so long ago that I had to re-read some of it to get back up to speed before reading this. Anyway, I am so glad that I did because it bought the whole thing together and made this book even more enjoyable. This really is excellent fantasy fiction and in my view its up there with the very best, its exciting, has great characters and a unique story-line. A truly great read and very hard to put down once you've started.

After recently reading 2 excellent books, i found this one to be a plodding dialogue and the characters from the first book seem to have become diluted and seem to have lost their way. The story was pedestrian with a lot of talk and little action, so much so that i quickly scanned pages and was still able to stay with the story. I lost interest and the book became a chore to wade through & a big dissapointment

This book wasn't quite as good as 'Among Thieves' (book 1) but that doesn't distract from the brilliant plot and interplay between the characters. I really like the use of the cant (old street slang) in the book and the characters are really cool. This book sets up the next book really nicely and I can't wait to read it. If you like nice flowing fantasy books with funny characters and not too much gore then this is a series that you should read.

Loved it

The story moves along very nicely with good plot development and an interesting creation of and alternative world. I love the creative use of language. I am looking forward to reading the next installment.

There's perfectly decent writing. There's interesting use of thieves cant. There's an intriguing setup of thieves in a fantasy middle east. There's a 'western' thief lord trying to stay afloat in a foreign sea.

But, the protagonist manages to fail at pretty much everything, and when he succeeds it's by luck rather than good judgement, cunning or anything else a thief lord should be displaying.

Also, this book suffers from being from the point of view of a character who, though vital to the plot, is peripheral to it. And, personally I didn't find that plot all that engaging.

Fast paced, imaginative, different. This decked book is also different to the first in setting and somewhat different in the approach, but it is still typically Drothe and co, regardless, and great fun. Loved it.
