Product description

With breathtaking animation that keeps you at the edge of your seat, this classic tale from Studio BONES is a hidden gem of its time.

Set in feudal-era Japan, a young boy named Kotaro and his faithful dog Tobimaru are caught in the turmoil of a grim prophecy. At the request of the Ming Dynasty's aging emperor, the boy is pursued by a band of formidable Chinese assassins. After escaping the destruction of the temple that took him in, he runs into a mysterious stranger who gets pulled into the chase.

When Kotaro's dog is poisoned, the nameless stranger reluctantly accepts payment to escort them to a temple in Shirato. The unlikely companions form a bond over saving Tobimaru's life, but unrest is brewing all around them. The Chinese assassins clash with the local lord as they build a religious tower, and a blond-haired, bloodthirsty swordsman among them seeks a worthy opponent. Chaos erupts when the assassins find Kotaro, and the Stranger must face his past before a horrible fate is met again.

Contains the film on Blu-Ray and DVD with both the English dub and the original Japanese track with English subtitles. Presented in Collectors packaging.

Ok, this film doesnt really do too much new in terms of story or characterisation... when it comes to these areas you can pretty safely say youve seen most of it before. Thats not to say that either story or characters are dissapointing in any way, its just that it all seems very familiar- you have the brooding but kind hearted samurai complete with a dark myserious past that haunts him, you have the nieve young boy who wants to fight for the things he loves no matter the cost and you have your typicall double crossing villians to oppose them.

But the places that this film scores highly for me don't really come in the concept, this film is all in the execution.

The animation in the fight scenes is by far the most fluid and flowing I have ever seen in an anime, combined with amazing choreography every piece of action is simply jaw droppingly brilliant to watch.
The way that the characters look or have been drawn is also very impressive... once again there isnt really anything new here but it all feels far more polished and detailed than in any other anime movie on the market at the moment.

The soundtrack for Sword of the stranger is also something to be admired, certain moments sent chills up my spine, it really is THAT good. I actually sat through the whole of the credits (something I very rarely do) just to hear one of the peices of music in its entierty.

Ive already mentioned that the story doesnt really do anything new or particularly surprising, but it has to be worth mentioning that the pacing of this movie is spot on in every respect- action sequences always kick in at just the right moment and the plot is slowly built up in very intense manner all leading to the amazing final conclusion.

I like how the personalities of the main characters are immediately seen but theres this darker side that you don't see till nearer the end, expect lots of action and jaw dropping sequences. I love this film, I cant really find anything bad to say about it.

Sword Of The Stranger is an awesome animated feature. It's not a movie you can show to little kids but if they're like 10 years old I guess it's alright. It does have violence in it but it's not extreme. But the movie has beautiful art and animation, a pretty solid story and a nice soundtrack. I can't tell you too much because I don't want to spoil it for you, but it's an action packed samurai epic about a nameless samurai, a kid he has to protect (a bit like Lone Wolf and Cub) and a dog trying to escape the mighty chinese army sent after them by a desperate, dying old emperor and lead by a mysterious and dangerous foreginer. Watch it!

Set during the Sengoku Jidai (The Warring States period of Japan), Bones Animation Studio's Sword of The Stranger tells a tale of merciless Ming fighters, ancient prophecies and a swordsman's search for salvation. For those of you familiar with Chambara (samurai) movies, Sword of the Stranger, is the anime equivalent. Story line is typical Samurai storyline, wandering samurai helps out a kid and gets caught up in a plot by foreigners and "bad" samurai. without giving the plot line away I will say that if you are familiar with chambara movies and enjoy the stories/genre you will enjoy this brilliant movie. Technically wise, this movie is very well animated. Traditional hand drawn cel work mixed with some CG. It is beautiful to look at and the fighting scenes are amongst the best I have seen in both anime and real life action. A beautifully crafted movie that needs to be seen just on the technical aspects alone. As for the storyline, it was just brilliant. Like the reviewer below mentioned, it's a bit similar to Cub and Wolf. There is elements of friendship, loyalty and honor and the music was epic and majestic, probably the words apt enough to describe and the score and the track during the final showdown is one grand enough to be put on par against some of the best you will ever listen to. The dvd has some great special features which includes an interview with the Japanese voice cast, both Tomoya Nagase who played Nanashi the main character and Yuri Chenin as the young boy Kotaro. Both of whom are newcomers, you also get trailers for other anime titles. If you haven't heard about or seen Sword of the Stranger yet then you're missing out on one of the better animated films to come from Japan in quite some time. It's a great action Samurai flick and feels like Kurosawa-like in many ways. Highly recommended.
