Having listened to Simon Scarrow on a book tour and also having just returned from Malta, I decided to give this a go. It's certainly full of action, but at times I found the description of battles and fights difficult to imagine. It just wasn't building a picture in my head. Still I would recommend this if you are interested in the history of Malta and the Knights Templers.

I have visited Malta many times and have read about the historical facts. This book brings the siege alive. It is easy to distinguish the fictional characters from historical facts. A good read.

Simon Scarrow is one of very few authors whose new book I'll buy without checking synopsis or previews, and this doesn't disappoint. It's a very personal view - so necessarily one-sided - of the Siege of Malta by a once-disgraced knight, who is summoned to the desperate fight to halt the advance of the Moslem armies. There are plenty of bloody battle scenes, reflecting the desperate plight of the Christian defenders and the determination of their enemy. The hero has grown to doubt his belief in God, a heretical view in those times; we may wonder at the fanaticsm, and the willingness of the knights and others to "die for the faith" rather than surrender, but it makes for a gripping read. A natural five-star read.

Format: Paperback
Yet another terrific read from Simon Scarrow. He takes a break from the brilliant "EAGLES" series to produce a book set in and around the Siege of Malta. In 1565, Malta is held by the Knights Hospitaller when it is invaded by a vast army of the Ottoman Empire. What follows is regarded as one of the bloodiest and most fiercely contested sieges ever.
In this book we have his usual mix of historical fiction woven in and around historical fact.
The hero of this story is a disgraced former knight of the order of St. John Sir Thomas Barrett who had been forced to leave Malta and the order after an illicit affair.
Twenty years later he receives the call to arms in the Orders hour of need. Following a summons from his former mentor Jean Parisot de la Vallette, he returns to a Malta that is threatened by the imminent invasion of the Muslims.
In a sub plot he is forced to accept as his untrained squire Richard, a spy in the service of Walsingham whose mission is to locate the whereabouts of a document secreted in Malta which could have serious repercussions for Elizabeth I should it fall into the wrong hands.
What follows is a very good book with Scarrow's usual well written and gripping edge of the seat fight scenes.
I can heartily recommend this riveting book.
