Having listened to Simon Scarrow on a book tour and also having just returned from Malta, I decided to give this a go. It's certainly full of action, but at times I found the description of battles and fights difficult to imagine. It just wasn't building a picture in my head. Still I would recommend this if you are interested in the history of Malta and the Knights Templers.

I had vaguely heard of the Knights of St John, and had never heard of the siege of Malta, which aparrently was infuential in us not all being Muslims today. It is set at the time when Elizabeth I was on the throne, and shortly before the Armada sailed for Britain. The Knights of St John are all that stand between Christianity and the Turkish Sultan's hordes. Besieged in their castles on the island of Malta they defy one of the best military forces in the world.

Those familar with the work of Simon Scarrow will know they can trust his story telling and the book moves at a fast pace, though never fails to provide the depth of detail that history nerds like me enjoy.

I have visited Malta many times and have read about the historical facts. This book brings the siege alive. It is easy to distinguish the fictional characters from historical facts. A good read.

Loved the book which I read in almost one sitting overlooking Valletta Harbour. Clearly well researched but a compulsive story.

I'm a huge fan of Macro & Cato adventures and this book is on par with the best of his Roman adventures and shows to me that Mr Scarrow is a brilliant historian and story teller. His heroes become living beings in a time and place described to the point you can smell both the exquisite plants and putrefaction of death. Dates and times, reasons, violence, heroics, religion, love and jealousy all help make this book a bloody good read that had me hooked after the first few pages.

I can't wait to read more from Simon Scarrow

I am not a literary scholar and therefore books which require me to look up words on every page in a dictionary become tedious.
Books that flow with engaging characters, plot and history are for me the best. Simplicity is genius.
