This was bought as a bag for work to carry a laptop and a couple of A4 books. In less than 6 months, the binding had torn and come away from the stitching near the zip and was completely unusable. Currently pursuing a refund for a product which is not fit for purpose. Very surprised as this is a very reputable brand, with a reputation for hardiness, which is why I purchased this in the first place.

I've had one of these for a couple of years now and like it - it's great for carrying a laptop as it has a padded compartment specially for it. It also has a BIG compartment beside that too, plus loads of other little compartments within other pockets, which are very useful.

The only thing that lets it down is that it's not good in the rain. There aren't any external covers over the zips, nor flaps inside them which means that in heavy rain, the rain gets into the compartments a little - not good as the main compartment, which contains the laptop compartment, has the main zip over it. Also the fabric isn't waterproof, so rain can penetrate it to the contents inside.

So it's great if you're not going to encounter rain, otherwise put a plastic bag over the laptop compartment and/or buy a big umbrella!

This is a well designed and well built bag. It has lots of individual compartments and good storage for the laptop.

Or so I thought....

I have had a similar experience to lots of people - those people who wrote in the question section and those people who wrote in the review section. They all say that this back pack is not made of sturdy enough material and it rips.

Like the other posters, my bag ripped near the zip. Looking through the descriptions on Amazon, I suspect that you need to "stretch" the fabric by putting large volume items in (eg the A4 binder described by one of the other posters). By doing that you will join the group of people whose bags rip near the zip.

The material from which the bag is made is surprisingly thin. The fact that it rips is therefore - perhaps - unsurprising.

I note the positive reviews talk about the comfort of the bag (it is), or the good design of the bag (it is), or even the good appearance (it is good). However, these are all short term features. What about its DURABILITY? I remain to be convinced.

If I had to choose again, I'd choose a different bag (eg the Freebiz). I expect such back packs to last many years of moderate use. Definitely not the case here.

If you are looking for a bag for occasional light use, then this is the bag for you. Everyone else, I'd suggest you go elsewhere.

I bought this backpack in January 2015.The capacity is good, it can easily hold a large laptop along with a big coat and other items without becoming too bulky. It is comfortable to wear and, in my opinion, looks good as well. However, my particular one recently developed a tear along the top zip line, see attached photo. This is probably a one off fault with this particular backpack, judging by the lack of other reviews saying the same thing, so i'd still recommend it - just be careful with how much you put into the bag as the zip seam may rip. Minus 1 star for my own disappointment.

Edit - Having read a few of the 1 star reviews, it would seem that this is not an isolated case and others have had the zip seam split at the top as well, with no recourse. Moved down to two stars - It still looks good and is comfortable if you don't get a dud. However, quality control seems to be lacking. Buyer beware...

Second Edit - Having looked at the Wenger website, they advise buyers to go directly to the retailer that the product was purchased from with any issues so I contacted Amazon who promptly sent out a replacement with no quibbles. Awesome customer service from Amazon.

The bag lasted only 6 weeks at school! The fabric around the upper zipper has torn 10cm.
The appearance is brilliant but the fabric quality is a shame.
I don't recommend this item at all.
Since this product is warranteed, I wrote to Wenger customer support (service@wenger.ch) with some photos and a clear complain. I received a feedback in the next 12 hours, confirming that they could replace the item or change it by another equivalent backpack, which is what I did after having seen the very high rate of dissatisfaction for the COBALT backpack. I received the new bag a few couple of days after.
So I recognize that Wenger customer service is indeed impressive, despite the poor quality of this item. I hope the new item will last longer...

I bought this for work as I have to traverse three long flights of stairs to reach my office in the University and my arms are now the same length as an Orang utans having carried heavy briefcases and other bags packed with assignments for marking or which have been marked and are now being taken back to the Uni. The idea of carrying the weight on my back and to include my laptop PC as well was an obvious answer. The pack arrived in record time from a third party reseller who in honesty gave brilliant service; it was well-packaged etc. This review then pertains only to the quality cost ratio of the product and it is here that the problem lies. The pack looks good and has handles on the top for moving it around when not being carries on one's back. Of the two handles one looks the business being quite strong and well up to the challenge of moving the pack. Thus far that particular handle remains reliable in use, the other one, however, is anything but and whilst I realised this fact from a preliminary examination of the bag and made a consequential resolution to not use it at all, came the time that I did just gently move the pack a couple of times over very short distances by holding said handle. The result was a tearing of the fabric at the point where the offending handle joins the pack. It probably won't cause problems in future use but it looks unsightly and of course with ne tear having occurred I am now wondering whether there could be more problems lurking in the wings to take me unawares.Read more ›
