About the Author
Arto der Haroutunian established his career designing restaurants, clubs and hotels.In 1970 he opened an Armenian restaurant in Manchester with his brother Koko. This developed into a successful chain of restaurants and hotels. It was a natural progression that he should then begin to write on Middle Eastern food. The cookery books combined his love of food with his great interest in the history and culture of the whole region

There are twelve chapters in the book, covering all types of Middle Eastern sweets and desserts including milk and rice pudding recipes from Armenia, Iran, Lebanon and Syria. I'm very familiar with those types of chilled desserts, and appreciated the recipes in this book which offer variations in flavour and texture.
This book also showcases the plentiful fruits of the region, and along with the usual recipes for date desserts and pastries, there are recipes from across the region for mousses and other chilled desserts using apricots, mangoes and peaches. An out-of-this-world recipe is Nuranoush, a creamy chilled pomegranate dessert flavoured with rosewater,which is attractively served in pomegranate shells.

A resource like this is thus immensely useful for lovers of Middle Eastern food. There is still a large proportion of recipes involving pastry, but there are more than enough others, of varying levels of complexity, to choose from. "Middle Eastern" here means more than just the Arab world, so covering Greece, Turkey, the Caucuses and Iran too. As well as desserts in the sense of a dish to finish off a meal, there are other sweet foods here such as biscuits and other foods you might have between meals or as an accompaniment to tea of coffee, as well as sweet drinks and jams and preserves. The photographs are few - it's more about packing in as many recipes as possible rather than being stylish - but just enough to give the book a bit of character.
