Gus or "Sweet Tooth", as he's nicknamed, is a young boy who lives in the woods with his father. Some sort of freak accident has mutated Sweet Tooth so that he has antlers on his head. When his father dies, he ventures out of the woods where he is ambushed by hunters and is saved by a mysterious, extremely tough man called Jepperd. With no choice but to follow his guardian, Sweet Tooth embarks on a journey out of the deep woods and into the wide world with Jepperd. But who is this man and why is he helping Sweet Tooth? What happened to the world where horses are now the sole mode of transport? Why does Sweet Tooth have antlers?

The excellent Jeff Lemire begins his first serial comic with an excellent start. The post-apocalyptic world he creates has shades of Mad Max and Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" but it's definitely Lemire's vision you see on the page. From the brothel where the women dress like mutants to the roving gangs of humans wearing animal masks, something very strange is going on here.

Lemire's art is also the best he's ever done, with Jose Villarrubia adding vibrant colours to bring the world to life.

Lemire keeps the reader guessing throughout the story, answering just enough to keep you going but allowing enough to remain unanswered so you'll come back for Book 2, especially with a cliffhanger like the one at the end.

A promising start to an original series.

Sweet Tooth is the story of a boy named Gus. A terrible plague called the Affliction swept across the world killing billions. In its wake the only children are hybrids, humans with animal attributes. No one knows why it's happened, but many dislike and blame these children for some reason. There is a bounty on these special children which is why many, including Gus, live in hiding. Gus has antlers like a deer and he lives in a remote forest with his father, but it's just the two of them and there is a big bad world out there full of nastiness. Without spoiling it, Gus is forced from his home and in the company of a drifter named Mr Jepperd he sets off on an adventure across a shattered post-apocalyptic America full of horrors and dangers.

Jeff Lemire is the writer and artist on this book and he has created something that feels part fairy tale, part horror and post apocalyptic adventure with an unlikely pair of characters. Along the way we find out more about the characters, but also how it is today in this ruined world. Gus is a wide-eyed innocent, and Jepperd is at the other end of the spectrum, a man of violence who has seen it all. But both of them have a unique code, Gus with what he was taught by his father and Jepperd who is driven, but at this point we don't know a lot about him. He's a tough man, someone used to surviving by himself in this world, so that tells you something about what he's probably had to do. The conversations between the two of them are sweet, touching and peculiar, with each learning a little from the other. The dialogue is short and sweet where it needs to be, giving space to let the art breathe.

Gus is also haunted by dreams and terrible nightmares, some of them terrible and others suggestive.

Sweet Tooth Vol 01 Out Of The Woods is an excellent read which surprised me because I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this graphic novel, I rarely read anything I've never heard of before. But to my surprise it was a great read, the only reason I don't give it five stars is because the writing is simplistic and there isn't much detail. However, the art and story is unique and I've never read anything quite like it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a graphic novel out of the ordinary.

I wasn't sure what to expect when reading this graphic novel but I was thrown quite quickly into Gus' world. Everyone is out to get one another and Gus has that extra something that people want. The relationships and characters are quickly but successfully penned out. The artwork is fantastic and realistic. It is a little short but it means that I can't wait to get my hands on to the next in the series.

I often read comics such as The Boys, Lock & Keys and Batman.

This was different and i LOVED IT.

One of the BEST comics i have ever read, fantastic story line, love the simple but effective art work.

Only complaint is the pages feel like 20 year old recycled newspaper, this deserved MUCH better treatment.
