...But sweet enough! OK, I'll start by `declaring an interest here' - I'm a long standing fan of all things Traffic-related, and am delighted that Capaldi's back catalogue is being dusted off, enhanced, embellished and generally made-over. I'd like to think I remain objective, however - I couldn't justify buying Let The Thunder Cry for a third time just to get an alternate `Favella Music' even though I suspect it's probably a better album than this, and would heartily recommend it. (Not quite a completist, eh?) Here though, I'm just focusing on `The Sweet Smell of Success'.

Its original release in 1980, on a label I'd never heard of, was a little worrying. Was Jim's star fading? The first track, `Hold on To Your Love' does nothing to dispel the fear. As Paul Minkkinen, who compiled the album with Jim's widow Aninha, suggests in his liner notes, it's not an obvious opening track: I suspect it's a leftover from some of the earlier ventures into -ahem- disco (some of which worked, to be fair!) Happily it's onwards and upwards thereafter.

`Take Me How You Find Me Girl' has us in similar vein, but is more fun and funky with Pete Bonas supplying both bass and lead guitars. Horns on both apparently by Mel Collins, but he doesn't sound a million miles different to Ray Allen's contributions on others. The title track is the third one in, with Jim and band rocking, albeit with polish and lots of sliding stuff up and down the fretboard a la Syd Barrett.

Now we've got over that awkward beginning I'll not bore you with my take on every track. Paul does an admirable job of that in the accompanying 16-page booklet, which I'm sure you'll read when you buy the album!

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Sound So Sweet 25 July 2012

Never heard of this Capaldi release until this reissue. Was hesitant to purchase when saw it was on Esoteric. Their remasters are usually somewhat lacking, and when they say bonus tracks are included, not always the case (sometimes just a marketing ploy to boost sales).

Sound quality is not impressive at all for a remaster, but the listed bonus tracks are actually included on this reissue.

With regards to the material itself, do away with the disco sounding junk, and there may be a handful of decent tracks. Even the remake of the Traffic tune - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - is just so, so (its more of an acoustic version, and would probably be okay if you were not familiar with the original version). Suprised they included the last 4 bonus tracks as they are just home cassette demos with relatively poor sound quality.

Bottom line, this release is more for a Capaldi completist (has to have everything he released), I just wouldn't spend too much money to get it, as it is "average" at best.
