By Mr. H VINE VOICE on 18 Dec. 2012
Format: Audio CD
Well they were no oil paintings to begin with, but the Beautiful South are beautiful no more. WIth Paul Heaton away being Paul Heaton, founding member Dave Hemingway has got together with female singer Ali Wheeler, who was the last of the line of female singers in the Beautiful band, and put out a set of songs that aren't a million miles away from the olden days.

I must admit that I always liked the songs, but never warmed to Mr Heaton, so this actually all works out rather well for me. The opening number 'Second Coming' is a jaunty little number that will make fans of yore feel very much at home, and with Dave Hemingway in fine voice, it gets things off to a fine start. The single 'Stick It In And Turn It' is another sprightly tune that shows off their songwriting chops, and the best of the harmony vocals are to be found on 'The Entertainer'. There's also an utterly fabulous ballad in the shape of 'Devil In My Wine', or the eighties as I prefer to think of it.

There is plenty of wit, wisdom, melody and harmony vocals on offer, and although the second half of the album takes a slightly darker turn in terms of melody, there isn't anything here that falls over and fails. If they can overcome the image of being the leftovers from the original band, and get this out to a wider audience, then there is no reason that success shouldn't be theirs a second time around.

Almost all the original Beautiful South line up less Paul Heaton. Not a duff track amongst them - promises great things. Welcome Back !
