This daft comic caper was written and directed by Wes Craven, but has little of the horror or gore usually associated with his movies. Instead the film concentrates on the comic book origins of the "Swamp Thing" character, and never takes itself too seriously. As a result of this, the movie is a hoot from begining to end, and makes for a fun (if very light) night's viewing. Don't expect to be scared, but laughs (intentional and unintentional) are a plenty, and fans of comic book horror will not be disapointed. Of particular note is the Swamp Thing's rubber costume which looks, well, like a rubber costume- something which Craven unashamedly waves in front of your eyes as if it were the best f/x ever put on a cinema screen. It's nice to see the purveyor of such classics as Last House on the Left and The Hills have Eyes give you a large dose (albeit much, much more blatent) of the sense of humour that would pepper Nightmare on Elm St and Scream.
All in all - if you're expecting a classic piece of cinema this is defintely not for you. However if you just want 90 mins of mindless entertainment, there are a lot worse pictures than this.

Swamp Thing passes along ok. It's not great, but it's not bad.

The problem is this film was swamped by The Toxic Aveneger, which kind of took the same premise and just made the monster so much better.

It's hard to call this horror. It's like a comic EC book dashed with comic violence and action.
Stars such people as Adrienne Barbeau and David Hess.

All in all, it's ok and well justifed to have an average mark of 3 stars.
But if you want the same kind of thing with 90 mins of mindblowing gore, action and fun check out The Toxic Avenger- quite simply it did it better.

When you watch Swamp Thing it's no surprise that Wes Craven is behind this comic-to-film translation. From the first few opening scenes the film is captured like a horror with low shot views of the forest swamp and foreboding music - there's a definite sense that there's something not-quite-human out there. As it happens there's nothing too out of the ordinary in the swamp just yet as Dr. Alec Holland is blissfully unaware that he and his sister's discovery of a wonder solution which accelerates and modifies organic growth is about to fall into the wrong hands. A violent raid by the evil Dr. Arcane leaves only 2 survivors - the romantically linked Alice Cable and Holland, who finds himself covered in the solution and severely burned before jumping into the swamp - where he transforms into the mutant man-plant, Swamp Thing.

The film then follows Dr. Arcane's attempts to re-create Holland's solution and capture the escaped Alice. It seems only one thing can stand in his way; Swamp Thing, with his incredible strength and uncanny ability to blend in with the foliage he's a formidable opponent.

This looks like many of the `80s low budget horrors which flooded the VHS market, but this is very light on horror and I would struggle to argue that this belongs to the genre. There's very little gore for a start, the main monster is a good guy, and the actual baddies seem too inept to be genuinely menacing!

Swamp Thing doesn't take itself too seriously but it's not too tongue-in-cheek to make it look like a camp parody (like the 1989 sequel!).Read more ›

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Swamp Thing is a 1982 comic horror film written and directed by Wes Craven (yes that Wes Craven for Nightmare on Elm street fame). It stars Ray Wise as our hero the handsome Doctor Alec Holland who through a chemical accident becomes the green rubber suit wearing Swamp Thing. He teams up with Alice Cable played by Adrienne Barbeau, a woman with a seemly indestructible perm who alternates between superchick and damsel in distress, throwing punches and blasting away with an assault rifle one minute, and tripping over her own feet the next. Together they take on the rather camp black polo neck wearing villain Dr. Anton Arcane portrayed by Louis Jourdan.

All in all Swamp Thing is an enjoyable and somewhat silly comic book romp. It is clear that Craven had little if any money to make this and it would be a lie to say that it doesn't show. That said all of the cast do play it straight if a little over the top. The special effects no doubt looked terrible at the time yet alone these days. Wes does however try to put in some nice directed moments and his skill as a film maker is evident. Swamp Thing differs in many respects from Craven's usual work, in that Craven's intent was to show the major Hollywood studios that he could handle action, stunts and major stars.
